Hi Brothers and Sisters, I’m proud to present a new 3 set sequel of my Cracks in the Iron Curtain series with groups from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and the German Democratic Republic. Most all of the 87 tunes have never been compiled before, so there’s a good chance you will hear them here for the first time. Funny thought: Whereas the “Russians” did listen to Western Pop, the western world did not know any song penned by their Eastern comrades, so who were the ignorant? Indeed, the Long Tall Texan and Tallahassee Lassie had arrived in the states of the Soviet block, but the same time the commies melted it with their own musical culture, so the result is quite a strange mix, not easy to listen to, as the tunes may sound much like the English and American songbook but soon you are thrown into a very different system with particular harmonies and rhythm patterns. The bands collected here are definitively not „garage“ but were, for the most part, nationally – and internationally - acclaimed stars admired for many years. If only there was not the battle with authorities, wich makes each tune gathered here a "blow against the empire"! If only the recording studios were equipped like say in LA or NYC. A disadvantage that makes them sound “garagey”, tho.
I guess this installment will be my last try to collect sounds from the Soviet states, though you never know… For the time being, enjoy the party my friends, and pour the Vodka!
