Well, not all tracks I collected come from budget labels tho most of them were recorded by (studio) cats who aimed to repeat the original sounds as pedestrian as possible (sometimes even including recording settings). First in the UK but later also in the US, label-owners were trying to take the shortcut, selling their goods for half the price, often presenting them as if it was the original artists or, sometimes, under a “recorded in the UK” tag . As they wanted to push out their records possibly the next day, I think that rather than combing the streets for punks they preferred to engage studio cats who did their jobs quite well I reckon. In my opinion, in some cases the covers even top the originals, like Hubble Bubble or Have You Seen Your Mother as done by the Chords. Many cheapo label had their own roster of bands and artists, (who mostly were the same musicians presented under different names, often not mentioned on the record labels). But also many garage bands tried to hop on the cheap train and sometimes to good results.
And a strange think happens, I can’t explain how: Listening to the cover versions, and catching the slight differences, it’s like listening to the song for the very first time, and for a fraction of a second I get the same feeling I had 50 years ago when I first time heard the original. Anyway, I hope this budget set will freshen up good memories and will deliver good listening fun all the cheap way through!
