Hi my friends / Salut mes amis!
I admit this selection might be of little interest to Canadian residents but I guarantee it’s great fun. A great deal of the 27 gems comes from my friend Eiffel who does an awful labor of love at http://www.cetaithier.blogspot.com , whereas 7 tracks were taken from "Canadian Nuggets" about 1 year ago. Unfortunately, I can’t find no trace of this (private) selection in the net (maybe someone will write me and give me more information…?) . As usual, more info and pics in the attached booklet. UC075, The Hully Gully

Ok, my friend Andreas of the extraordinary Berlin Beatet Bestes-Blog (http://mischalke04.wordpress.com ) started me off with this and half of the tracks of this selection are his. I just added some more songs once I was bitten by the Hully Gully-bug. For your scientific interest, the Hully-Gully was a dance based on The Frug, which itself was a variation on The Chicken, invented in 1961 by Frank Rocco at the Cadillac Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida. The dance was based on the song of the same name, made popular by The Olympics in 1959 (first track of this selection). Other than bein’ a short lived dance craze, at least in Germany (and in Italy, too) the word has survived until today and stands for somthing like “(joyful) mess-up”… So shake your shoulders, wiggle your knees and take a lesson….

UC077, Germany vs the Continent

Germans against Poland, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Yugoslavia and even Russia tryin’ to conquer the world (…maybe we‘ve seen this before ?). Anyway, I hope that this time the battle will definitively be more fun and you’ll enjoy 15 (mostly) non-comped beat tracks from Germany juxtaposed to 15 selected gems from the rest of the Continent. Whilst the Rattles and the Lords get the medals for the most original understanding of the English language, and the Cousins from (French speakin’) Belgium are rewarded for their German language skills, who will win the Beat-battle? This one should have been posted some time ago, but then, Roadrunner Beat Beat came up with a splendid series called "Swedish 60s Beat" (don’t miss it). So, to avoid overlaps (except for track 13, I just couldn’t resist), I had to redo my homework. The same thing goes for Dan’s blog dedicated to 60’ Swedish. UC079 El Lado Mexicano, Vol. II

Olà amigos!…... if you’d ask me what nation had the craziest 60s beat bands, I’d name Mexico. Here’s 32 tracks winning the screaming-contest with groups that slip into the roles of all kind of weird beeings, from mice, rats, frogs, bears, babies, Frankysteins (sic!), UFOs (i.e. OVNIs), Batmen, Popeyes and boys singing like they were girls…. no doubt Los Hitter’s “Hunky Punky" finally outdoes the lame original and Los Tepetatles'"Cordobès" is one of the craziest songs I've ever heard … don’t let the bad sound quality of some tracks ruin the fun, have one more Tequila con Limòn and turn up the volume… as usual more info and pics in the 8-page booklet (muchas gracias go out to all bloggers I have named in the libretto). UC080 El lado Español

Precisely one day before goin’ on vacation, here’s a new installment with 29 beaters from Spain, the islands of Mallorca and Gran Canaria and from Cataluñia bein’ the region between Barcelona and the French border where people don’t speak Spanish but Catalan (that’s why names of bands from Cataluñia start with 'Els' instead of 'Los'). Anyway, you’ll hear some combos that have been quite forgotten by compilers but also some uncompiled tracks from the more famous bands of the peninsula. I hope this make a nice soundtrack for your holidays, too. Don’t mind about the bad sound quality, specially of the first and the last track. More info and pics in the attached booklet. I’ll be back in September. Thanks to all my friends who wrote me, and please do drop me a line if you digged (or unliked) this selection, I’ll read my mailbox sometimes even during vacation. Hi, Hello, Ciao, Holà, Salut, ecc….. here’s a double feature of mostly uncompiled little gems from nearly all around the word (‘xpt US and UK) starting from 1963 up to 1968….some pre-beat, some moody tracks, some commercial stuff, and heaps of inept garage-fuzz. Actually, I can’t tell which tracks are my favorites, so why don’t you get back to me and tell me which ones you liked (or disliked) most? UC083 + UC084, The USA, pt. 7 and pt. 8

….another Double-Feature exploiting Gàrageland! (I like to put the stress on the first syllable like the Clash did some time later on “We’re a Gàrageband”…). The selections cover forgotten sounds of the 60s from 1960 (!!) to 1969. In the first part of both installments you’ll get some Surfbeat (real movers tho’) plus some great Frat and Beat sounds (I really wonder how gems like the moody Tribu-Terrys’ My Shadow is You' , the Keyes’ stomping version of Farmer’s Daughter and the Prophets of the Doom’s single could escape the “official“ compilations). We’ll have a hommage to the late Sky Saxon (RIP), both sides of a Pontiac-car-dealers’ freebee (Hi Andy!), a wah-wah-organ played by a 6-year old girl(!), Jeff Barry on kazoo, a singing DJ, some cool versions of staples like Route 66, Knock on Wood, and Hold on I’m Coming, and real Bears roaring at the end of the show. I’d love to have more info on bands like The Valiants, The Twilighters, The Hard Times, and The Tides (anyone…?). Huge thanks to all bloggers I have mentioned in the booklet. UC085 Girls with a Beat, Vol. 2

…time again for the gentle gender even if some of’em state they’re "man-eaters on motorbikes" (sorry, no pic). So here’s a selection of 29 mostly forgotten female beaters, moviestars, hitparade-raters, schoolgirls, housewives, contest-winners, big wig-protegees, and all-girl-bands raising their voices, picking their strings and banging their hides to show they sure can surf, beat, pop, and soul like their male colleges. Funny, but it seems that girls and brass go well together so you’ll hear some soul and even a few orchestrated tracks but also a few genuine garage-pearls… I’d love to know more about Lily Dee, the Phatons, Chris Kersen, and the R Lewis Band (it’s possible their weird garage track‘s from the 50s?). Welcome to the Teutonic singing Beat-girls! As 17 of 29 tracks were picked from a great site this installation is named after (Verlorene Mädchen, http://blogs.myspace.com/teutonic_jens) (Hi Jens!) I’m breaking the rule not to post selections with tracks you can find at one sole blog. Anyway, I hope you’ll dig the girls although this compilation has very little to do with Garage-punk but more with Schlager-platters. Still, I think it’s quite a charming set showcasing how the German market jumped on the Beat-train rushing in from the US and the UK with mostly lushly orchestrated cover-versions and also originals. If you understand German you will surly appreciate the desperate and often funny adaptations of the English language, and if not, at least you’ll get heaps of nice cover-pics in the booklet attached. Again, huge thanks to Jens (keep on posting, Jens) and enjoy the show! (PS: If you ask me, I will post Teil 1 of this series…) (PPS: I’d love to know who’s the unknown girl on track 10…)

Here we go on another trip around the globe (or quite like, as someone might have noticed that the world down under’s missing)-(since I’m preparing a double-feature on OZ and NZ). I’m afraid I got no info about the groups who I think are the highlights of this set, as Los Brujos from Spain, or Los Desenfrenados and Los Espias from Mexico. Btw: here’s some cover-versions of staples such as Gloria and Who Do You Love that are most probably the best ever made, don’t you think so? Finally, I hope you like the Crickets from Romania and sorry for the skips on the track by Los Bestias, recorded from TV. What was right for the Beatles is only right for the Stones, so here’s the counterpart of WannebeBeatles (UC058), 28 groups covering the Stones, all in strict chronological order (by original recording dates, taken from The Rolling Stones Discography, http://www.rolling-stones.com.pl). As with the Beatles-covers, what surprises me is that probably none these tracks comes near to the original versions but each track sheds a new light on the original songs and makes me understand how great they really were and still are. Hope you experience the same feeling.

You might have wondered why there was only a handful of Australian groups in my selections…. here’s the answer: I’ve collected groups from the land down under in a special file, and finally put them on 3 CDs, in chronological order. More than uncomped tracks (although you’ll find a few rare gems), it has become a “best of”-installment. Seems that Australian beat has been covered quite well, but since on this side of the globe it’s quite hard to get hold of the excellent catalogue by labels such as Canetoad (Hi Dean Mittelhauser!), Festival or Corduroy, I’ve decided to pick the lesser known tracks of anthologies and reissues, leaving out famous bands like The Easybeats or The Missing Links as I assume every garage-fiend will be familiar with their output. Time for a dive into the Japanese 60s scene. This selection is an uncomped set in the straight sense meaning that none of the tracks has appeared on GS-compilations such as GS I Love You, Banzai Freakbeat, Cult GS Collection, Go Go Group Sounds ecc. but all tracks where taken from various albums that have been reissued but are quite difficult to find outside Japan. The English skills of the GS-singers might be limited, but sound-quality is great so you can even listen to this compilation with headphones! No liner notes this time, as the stories of the groups featured are well known. Hope you’ll like my GS-selection. PS: Thanks to Joey from Germany for helping me identify the two titels of the Beavers'tracks... so the only mystery is tracks # 22..... anyone?

Hi dear Reader! This is kind of a companion to the Australian-installment I posted a few weeks ago. I’ve tried to pick tracks by less famous NZ-groups (leaving out the Pleazers, the La De Das, Larry’s Rebels) that haven’t appeared on any compilation (official and private, as far as I’m aware). Again, most of the tracks have been included in various anthologies (and in the RockinBeat-series), but I hope you’ll dig this collection anyway. The overall-sound is very beaty, seems that many NZ-Groups by 1967 had crossed the Tasmanian Sea to try their luck in Australia.
