Very much alike my recent “Grabaciones olvidadas” double set, this 5 piece installation yields from a box of 46 CDs “Exitos de la Sicodelia” that were sent to me by Juan Manuel Muñoz via my friend José Kortozirkuito of the fab Tommentón en la CuadrA blog. My job was to select tracks that have never been compiled before, not even on “private” comps (like my own El Lado Mexicano-series). Hence, the 125 tunes gathered here are in no way a definite collection but ‘Best of the Rest’. As 90% of the 46 CDs consisted of cover versions, I decided to include only covers sparing the rest for another Mexican set soon to come.
Seems that the Mexican market needed Spanish covers of the latest hits from the US and UK, and often you could choose between 5 or 6 covers of the same song recorded by different artists.
Actually, the garage-tag is incorrect as you will hear Mexico’s top groups recording for the nation’s leading labels but it’s poorly equipped recording, mixdown, mastering and cutting facilities that make the final results sound garagey to our ears. At any rate, all versions offer that special sound Mexican’s 60s groups are famous for: Simple arrangements, but a lot of (dancing) fun. I’m sure you won’t get annoyed.
