60s (mostly) Uncomed - UC256 - (Whacky) Surf Songs a Go Go II

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Hi Hodaddys and Beach Bunnies, summer has come and I’m already ready for the beach and the weaves and the sun and bikini contests, drag cars, hootenannies, stock car races, and surfin’ safaris. Don’t be afraid for another soundtrack to the happening,  I hope you won’t mind to meet hoards of Little Hondas, Little Cobras, Little Hondas and Running Rabbits. I’ve tried to avoid overlaps with the many re-released Surf-albums and anthologies but dig out the rare stuff I hope you’ve never heard before or you’ll love to hear again. Most bands hail from California and other unlikely American states, tho’ it seems there’s surfing grounds also in Japan, Mexico, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, England, Uruguay and Germany. So wax down your board, rig up your woodie and let me hear yu scream: ….Kalabongaaaaaaahhhhh! (sorry, I meant Cowabungaaaaaahhhh!)
PS: next will be a follow up of Surf Instros!

UC257a/b (Whacky) Surf Instros a Go Go II

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

If you’re willing to go through 3 times Pipeline, various Wipe outs and more than one version of Walk don’t Run and The Cruel Sea, then you will probably welcome part II of Whacky Surf Instros. I’m happy to present surf groups that hail from literally all the world and even from nations that don’t have any sea shores at all. Again, I’ve avoided the more famous groups already featured on various anthologies and official comps, so most sounds here should be fresh to even the toughest surf head. Several tracks were recorded in 65 or 66, i.e. after the Surf fad, but I think they fit in well as they capture the same (stupid) spirit. This goes even for the final track of the set, which was recorded by the original Peruvian 60s band during a reunion in 2008 but I guess the sound wasn’t so much different 40 year before. Enjoy!

UC258 - US Garage Gems, Vol. 36

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

29 more Gems I have found in the net (mostly all at youtube channels, skipping famous websites like Dan’s Garage and youtube Linda Lou I think you all will follow). This time we’re starting from 1958, but do not fear, we’ll always stay true to our Garage claim. As far as I’m aware, none of the tracks has been compiled before, not even on private collector’s installments, so it’s like hearing theme here for the first time after 50 years (unless you don’t remember better or visit certain youtube channels I have mentioned in the booklet). 5 acetates ( I suppose all from the States?) render this set even more special, and I do not know why they missed pressing. Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy the mix and you ‘ll dig the booklet which features a few scarce photos and group info.

UC 259 – Non - Garage #6

Back again with more tunes that all - for one reason or another  - cannot be put into the Garage drawer, although…..  I’m afraid yodeling and comp blowing is not exactly Garage, and luscious female groaning and Ya Habibis don’t help either, although the final vomit on We'll Not Twist Again definitely adds a garage twist. Germany and Great Britain lead on this set, followed by artists from literally all over the world proving that stupidity and fun are an international phenomena. I guess this is my favorite series of the 60sUC archive as it features never compiled tracks (which probably won’t see any further publication than here), and it should deliver a fab soundtrack to parties, specially with lots of kids or childish people. Our party kicks off with a promo for Cherry B, and I’ve thrown some unapt radio ads in the mix. For the rest, I suggest you follow Margot Resch’s genius “Kartoffel Beat, every boor can dance to it / stepping on other people’s feet / doin‘ the Kartoffel Beat”.

Interspiel - German Twisters

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

I doubt this double set will get many followers. Tho I hope it proves, by its variety of interpretation, that the Twist was non a short lived dance fad but a musical genre, say as Surf music. Like Surf, it’s all about FUN lacking all serious approach, and it swept all over the world and was played and danced from 1960 to 64, even in 65! When the wave swept over to Germany, my fellows did what they could to render things more serious, tho' singing about parrots, donkeys, geishas and watussis doesn’t help, I’m afraid. So I hope the ones out there who don’t speak German will anyway appreciate those nifty, ridiculous rhymes and wacky wordings, or anyway might still get a good sound picture about what was goin’ on in the Milkshake bars and Beer Kellers and Tanzkaschemmen soon after the war and rebuilding the country: naïve, unabashed, inept, unhinged , ….FUN!  For the rest, I suggest you follow Peter Wegen’s advice for Poor little Sheila: “Halt in Gang dein kleines Feuer / Binde gut deinen Esel fest / Denn von allem was dir lieb und treu / blieb dir nur dieser schmale Rest!”

PS many tracks appear on CDs “Twist in der DDR” and “Twist in D” recently published by a famous German oldie label but I kicked out the lame and lousy tracks (like Yodel Twist ecc.) and added many more overheard gems which makes my set definitely a much better hear! Grab it while you can! Nice cover shots in booklet!

Linda Lee’s Lost & Beloved, Vol. 6

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

For the 6th time back again with lovely Linda’s finds proving once again her extraordinary (garage) taste and her ongoing efforts in diggin’ up fresh, uncompiled recordings (45s, acetates, even tapes) . As usual, she delivers various sounds from early frat instros to kinda soulish efforts, and from moody ballads to wacky psychedelia, as you will hear. In between, some slightly poppier outings and some ultra rare, unnamed tracks (which are waiting for ID, anyone?) I’m not sure of how the last track by Witches Bru was recorded, tho’ it sounds interesting. Anyway, huge thanks go out to our gal Linda, and good luck for your further diggin’ work! (with this series, I focus on the unreleased stuff, you will find more great tracks at youtube Linda Lee https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1wvJWUJyu5FVH20KrEp0Cg). Eviva!

TOMMYKNOCKERS BEAT CLUB – THE R.I.P. EDITIONS, VOLUME 12

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Well, if the city of Rome was built on 12 hills, and Moses delivered 12 holy commandments to the world, then I hope this set number 12 will be a most noble devotion to my friend and inspiration Werner alias the Lolly Pope , RiP. I admit it was much overdue, but since #11 many new uncompiled gems have come up to the surface, which proves the UK catacombs keep on yielding unheard / overheard gems, right? I‘m sure the Lolly Pope will pardon me for being slow, but here, finally, is a double set with 48 fresh sounds that not have seen any reissue before and feature many groups who never got a mention in any UK beat encyclopedia, like the Limeys, or the Lemmings. Some acetates are waiting for identification, as well. I’m sure The Lolly Pope will bless my efforts. And I hope you’ll dig.

PS all tracks from sites, blogs and youtube channels listed in the booklet, huge thanks brothers!

UC260 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - US Garage Gems, Vol. 37

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Since US Gems #36, in just 3 month time I have collected quote a load of uncompiled tunes which means the US Garage well is far from running dry. I admit I have widened the confines slightly since I reckon some groups did Garage long before the tem was invented, black musicians can be a garage band, too, and pop stars of dubious past exceptionally recorded Garage songs, so I think it’s only right (and mostly good fun) to include tunes that have slipped compilations and anthologies so far. Moreover, most of the groups even slipped the Bible (Teenage Mayhem, that is). Which means I did a good digging job, right? As always, the tracks are (more or less) chronologically ordered, so you will end up in the 70s which equals the beginning of the end. Of course, huge thanks go out to the all bloggers youtubers and special site runners I have listed in the booklet. Move to the Beat, brothers and sisters!

Well , boys and girls, I’m afraid we’re back again on the spooky old monster trail, I just didn’t want to wait for Halloween, as it’s for kiddies . So beware and prepare to meet all kinds of personification of the wicked and the evil I think you’ll never have met before but they are always on the lure for you. Luckily, there’s some good dudes as well (like Batman and Tarzan, not so sure about Frankystein)  who will be helpful to keep the devil away and avoid the final disaster of the Day the Whole World Died, I hope.  This set hardly fits the 60s Uncomped tag, as many monsters hail from the 50s, even 52, but do not fear (pun intended) , they’ll always be scary as hell and will make your bones shiver.  I hope you’ll dig some delicious specialty of our "32 Corpse Monster Dinner", like Cadaver Barbeque for entrée, Brain on Half Shell, Goulash with Hearse Radish, and Fresh Cut Ladies’ Fingers for dessert. So raise a glass of Bloody Mary to my friends Igor,  Hoodoo the Voodoo, Baron Daemon, John Zacherle, Boris, Louis the Monster Miss, and specially Joe Bad. Tell them R.M. Renfield says hello!

UC262 – Batidos do Brasil

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Searching for Brazilian Garage nuggets (time frame is 1965 to 67, before Tropicalia kicked in) , you find some amusing things like one of the most famous groups called Brazilian Bitles (sic) who recorded "Satisfaction". Or take a group that was made to publish their records (quite successfully) under more than 10 different names, tho’ they were still the same (The Fevers).  At any rate, I admit most Brazilian  6os singles can only hardly be tagged Garage, and you might miss snotty voices, overridden fuzz and wild screams. In other words, it somehow misses the rough edge. Brazilian pop is closer to The Beatles than to the Stones, it prefers choruses to single voices, and, most of all, it’s never angry! (I don’t  know how they manage that). So after skipping the boatload of choral songs backed by just acoustic guitars and bongos around a campfire (which is not really Garage), I’m proud to present 51 tunes in the Garage vein that have remained uncompiled on the various commercial and private comps available. To give my set a fresh kick, I have thrown some girls in the mix, and I’ve enclosed some poppier efforts as well. Wackily, It all ends with an instrumental penned by Frenchman Chopin. Olà, the day after I finished the recent edition all at once many more tracks popped up from the Brazilian Underground so I thought the best would be to create a volume #2. So here’s more of the garagey side of Brazil, I compliment Os Brazilian Boys for their Dada English, and I pardon Os Inocentes for whistling during the recording session (which ain’t garage at all, I’m afraid). I hope you’ll enjoy the softer side of Garage, which is never angry (I repeat), but you can sing along from the first to the last track. After all, I was imagining what this set would sound like (and if there were even much more gems!) if Brazil’s recording industry and mass media wasn’t that much behind. At any rate, I think I’ve collected all valid and never compiled tunes you will only get here or at youtube channels José Claudio Menezes De Souza   -  Valdi Santos – Tralha Brasil  -  Tropicália Discos Melomano Discos – Schutbart (muito obrigado meus amigos!)

I admit the bulk of live tracks on this set might indicate we really are scratiching the bottom of the Beat barrel, although me myself even listening to 2 versions of Shake Hands, and Woll Bully, plus amateurish takes of My Generation, For Your Love, I’m a Man, and Walking the Dog I cant’t help but feel inside of the happening scene getting all of those unique thrills again even after 5o years of time, so why should I worry about anything else or look for other probably better versions? As you might fear, you get a mix of sounds, starting off with a Danceparty at a Dutch beach, ie. with the cry of seaguls. I’m really buffled so many uncompiled tracks from the Netherlands have popped up tho’ everyone thought this land has been grazed widely. I hope this set will prove the contrary with flashy sounds and original (dada) wordings, the term Nederbeat stands for. Geniet ervan meisjes en jongens!

Admittedly , to be fully appreciated I’m afraid this set needs German language skills, and a can’t image what effect it does on all who don’t have. At any rate, I’m convinced the sexy voices of my girls will get through anyway. Finally, music is international, and I can enjoy a compilation with all Yugoslavia artists without understand a word. I’m happy this set kicks off with an homage to my beloved hometown, and many girls und ladies hail not only from confining nations ( Belgium, Denmark, UK, but also the German Democratic Republic, remember we’re in the 60s) but even come from faraway lands such as Sweden, Israel, and South Africa. Of course you have to get through think layers of greasy Humpta Humpta and orchestrated Schmalz, especially when dealing with the female pop music market in Germany. I think I selected the best (uncompiled) efforts. So I hope you’ll dig, Soulbrüder und -schwestern, I know there’s many of you out there, like Jens from the fab Beat Fräuleins series.  Let me know, your comments keep this page alive.

When you scratch the bottom of the Italian Beat barrel you can be sure to go through lots of wacky sounds, cover versions, and all kinds of odd. So prepare for two times She Loves You, and I hope you’ll like the Fab 4 as much as I do. At any rate, I’ve tried to pick the nuggets of unheard i.e. uncompiled recordings, although, exceptionally, very few tracks from hard to find compilations have slipped in as they were missing in my own archive (no overlaps with the 32 volumes of Caveman’s fab "Atto di Forza” series). I’m specially happy about groups that were completely unknown, like the Little Boys, I Gemelli, I Diamanti and the Berta’s. I hope you dig.

- eYeGeNeYe productions proudly presents: Nippon Covers (on Flexi and Vinyl)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

I guess this is the rarest of the rare: nearly half of this set comes off Flexis which were given away or sold in combination with magazines or fashion products in Japan, whereas the rest was published on cheapo samplers or 45 editions that were hastly produced to jump on the beat train. I understand the artists – most of ‘em capable musicians - were specialized on cheapo recordings, whilst others like the Spiders or Isao Bito, although big stars in Japan, were published on flexis as well. So, in the rush and the sloppyness of the production, the result sounds the same as if you would ask 4 punks to play "I want to hold your hand". At least to my ears, all tracks you’ll hear have the word GARAGE printed in bold letters all over and this selection should rightly be introduced in the (un-)official databases of garage music!
Finally, good fun is added by the Dadaist Nippon English, as many artists weren’t afraid to bypass on the short cut, and some chords that wouldn’t follow the music sheet shed some extra delight and freshen up the original versions.
I hope you’ll love the Beatles and be ready for 5 versions of Twist&Shout, 4 versions of Please Please me, 3 times I feel fine, ecc. …. And be trustful: after the first Casey Asanuma efforts, things will get slowly better.  Ain’t she’s sweet / I think she’s kind a meat!

Strange sounds indeed, you’ll hear some promotional clips, gravy sounds, hens’ clucking, a Glockenspiel, vibraphone, sitar, a boys Choir, an entire music hall singing… I have tried to collect overseen and unheard i.e. never compiled tracks from the 60s that leave the grounds of Eleki and even GS but go a little further. Some of the famous groups are doin’ their best to switch on to the new psychedelic wave, and many newcomers prove that Japan must have enjoyed a wild and thriving scene. So welcome the 6 piece groups, the beat girls, and even some orchestra, and don’t miss Minoru Shiraki, a 140 cm tall man who, by birth, still looked like a baby but finally got famous in the movies. Only in Japan, I guess. Enjoy, brothers and sisters!

UC268 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - US Garage Gems , Vol. 38

With 4 different bands of the same moniker, this set could have been dubbed “The Chosen Few of..”
Apart from the Astronauts and Cyrkle, Terry & the Flippers and Jack Ely, all other bands’ names were new to me, so I’m proud to present another charge of rare records that have slipped the official discographies (with highest esteem  to TeenBeat Mayhem) and have been collected in no place but here. And I promise, in one way or the other, they’re all shiny gems. As listeners might have noticed, I have widened the Garage-term slightly to include records beyond the usually suspected so you’ll meet novelty records, bands with full fledged brass sets and even orchestra. All deliver great garage sounds tho’, at least to my ears.

This is a mighty fine find I guess, and I think it shouldn’t get missed. Posted on youtube by Martin Boriš , there’s a 45‘ video excerpt of the first Checoslovacian Beat festival in 1967, featuring 13 Garage songs, all killers, and in good audio quality to boot (and nice filming, too). You should admire this piece at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RJhD-InmV8 and you sure won’t be deluded.
I just have created a MP3 track for CD lovers plus a little booklet, translating some information I found from Check to Google-English, and trying to identify the artists / song titles of each track (which were wrongly stated in the youtube post). I hope there’s some Cecz Beat fan out there who can help finding the missing words. Huge Thanks for sharing the film go out to Martin Boriš !

Losers of Rock’n’Roll - Drrrafi !

My favorite loser ever since. After some small hits in 63 and 64, Drafi hit big time with his “Marmor Stein und Eisen bricht" (Marble breaks and Iron bends in the English version) in 1965 - even today, every German can sing this hymn -,  followed by more hits in 1966. But then bad luck stroke hard: Two little girls reported they saw Drafi pulling out his **** from his balcony, go figure! (at the trial, it was never been proved he tried to invite the girls, and Drafi stated he just had a piss at a party). Thus, the 20yo singer got sentences to 9 month of jail on probation, plus a 1000 DM fine, but what was worse was the German media, spearheaded by Axel Springer’s Bild Zeitung, started a hate campaign and totally ignored his recordings. Nevertheless, Drafi would soldier on outing recordings after recordings, many published under the most various pseudonyms, often with little success, and he would keep on recording until his death in 2006. Without never really  charting it again.
I’ve called this little collection of his best work Drrrafi! as he had the quirk to stress the rrrr in the German speaking which gave him kind of a trademark. You’ll hear a great singer with a unique voice and a strong like for highly commercial sounds, backed by The Magics who where one of the sharpest bands around, progressively sounding like The Creation. Commercial meets Garage. More that the pinnacle of German Pop music, Drafi is the epitome of Germany. Hail to my hero!
