So prepare to meet serial killers (Der Harman), forbidden kiddy songs turned into beat tunes (Umma Latta), people who want to live in HillyBilly Town so much for the shootings, and maniacs that get their kicks in derailing trains (Roy Clark), whereas my fave drink becomes the Last Potion No9. But at the end there’ll be your Kaplan to save you. In between some deranged live tracks and demo tapes in trashy audio quality (sorry), many tunes you probably snobbed until some year ago, more infamous budget bands and missed hits from the neighbor lands (Holland, Switzerland, GDR), mostly all never compiled before and many not even mentioned in the bible (HJ Klitsch’s "Shaking all Over”). I guess the Hounddogs trumpet the message out loud and clearly: “Satzs what I want!” Anyway, I hope you don’t speak German. And listening to the Kraut’s versions of famous UK hits, it probably would even be better if you don’t speak English (“I can’t buy a man to another smoke / than sell cigarettes on me”)..

When I searched beyond the Iron Curtain the last time (in march 2016!), I never imagined there will be a follow up, but never say never. In the meantime, I have learned that Pieciolinie and Piec Linii are two different Polish bands, how to pronounce words such as Gdzie chcesz, and I know now that Ej ta droga does not mean what you think (Google suggests "Hey, this way!”, and anyway, ‘t would be Vodka, and these sets are dedicated to two of its most famous victims, i.e. Peter Novak of George & the Beatovens and Miki Volek of Olympic).
So I hope you’ll welcome 75 new entries of rare and never compiled Sovjet gems (tho’ in some nations, like Poland and Csz, some groups had anthology CDs, but try to get them). I collected some lesser known (and better) tracks from the “famous” groups (at least in their homelands), a good charge of versions (all a little pedestrian but still fine and sometimes, like Romanian Sincron’s Money Money (sic!) even better!), challenging no singers less that Eric Burdon, Steve Marriot, Phil May, Mick Jagger et al), and to good avail I’d say. You ‘ll be stunned by their most particular harmonies and rhythm patterns by the many original tunes which prove a strong homegrown tradition you won’t find in many other nations I guess. And even though in the lands behind the Curtain there was not one single fuzz pedal to get a grab on, all bands succeeded to deliver a sharp sound anyway and you will easily feel just like in a Western garage. Of course, the musicians featured here earn an extra praise as they struggled hard to build their own instruments and amplifications (including guitar pick-up wiring by means of sewing machines!), risking heavy censoring and concert interdiction and sometime even ended in jail.
We have to thank Google Translator for many strange sounding titles which add some extra-fun to this set, and all bloggers and youtubers who proudly presented and still present their treasures in the net. My plough through the Russian Beat diasporas is continuing and has already yielded two nice songs for Cracks #10, so just wait another 2 1/2 years! In the meantime, enjoy the gems!

Welcome to the Wigwam , kids! I admit the first records I bought were Speedy Gonzales, Juanita Banana and Hazy Osterwald’s Kriminal Tango. These songs must have sparked my passion for the funny tunes jukebox, which has never left me since. But don’t call it Novelty, please, since those records were made to jump on the train of the latest fads and newest dance trends. Instead, the tunes I have collected here (except a few exceptions such as Porky Twist and Mini Kini) take their inspiration from heroes and stories of the past. My collection (more or less in alphabetic order, kids don’t mind) starts in 1956 (Gadabouts) arriving in ‘73 (Tam Tam) proving that kids around the world always knew how to get the ball a'rollin’. I am sure Tarzan, Cheeta, Topolino, Cleopatra and the Princess of Persia will not annoy you. So saddle your monkey, put on your Colbacco, take your ticket to Tokio, do the Wiggle Wobble and ….. have FUN!!!! (in the meantime , I still wonder: if a Pappahoo’s papa is a Pappahoo, too, then the Pappahoo’s papa is the grand Pappahoo?)

Well, we’re back again with a fresh load of 90 rare tracks by female artists and singers. Many were practically unknown to me, whereas I selected famous stars who had some gems in their discography that are worth to be unearthed. I’m happy my girls and ladies hail from all around the world, from Mexico to Germany and from Canada to the Philippines, with Dutch girls singing in German, French girls singing in Turkish and Italian and Italian in French. All in alphabetical order, as all tunes - more or less - are about – He left me - I love him - He left me again, so that’s the red thread. I must say that Gal Garnett doesn’t sound female at all, especially if you look at her picture in the booklet. Apparently some guy managed to slip in the bird’s nest….

This should be a great gift for Christmas, my dearest! After Losers number 1 and 2 (Pete Best , Drrrafi Deutscher), next in line is Tommy Falcone whose Cleopatra label published a good charge of singles. All are great, some even genius compositions, arranged with a whirlwind imagination and wild studio effects. But to no avail. More or less, all bombed. Definitely another loser, I’m afraid. In between 1962 and 1970 Tommy dabbled with all genres you can imagine, from Surf to Pop, novelties to Soul, from unhinged Psychedelia, Beach Boys style, and (wacky) instros to girl songs, Doo Wop and Tamala Motown, none of which would ever seriously trouble the charts. It didn’ t help when he asked his wife to put on a black wig and an sneak in an old Halloween Cleopatra costume to add a sexy note for the record sleeves. Neither did his decision to proudly put the NY letters under the record logo although he worked out of a basement in New Jersey. Maybe it was lack of relations, maybe it was just bad luck. At any rate, with all his perseverance and tenacity, all his passion and imagination, he would have deserved a better fate. Unbelievably, if you goggled his name very few notions come up on the man, and just 2 or 3 photos (I’ve reproduced in the booklet.)
A fact that I like lot is that Tommy - who was a professional accordion player - never played his instrument on any of the recordings, although they feature nearly the complete array of a fully fledged orchestra including many unusual instruments. But not his accordion. Extra-cool!
Tommy died at the tragically young age of 40 from a heart attack after coming off stage at an accordion concert. Which adds a sad note to the live of a Rock’n’Roll loser. At any rate, with instros like the Centuries’ "Outer Limits" and the Hallmarks’ "Soul Shakin' Psychedelic Sally", Tommy posthumously has conquered his "Best of the Losers" fame within the community of Garage aficionados.

Cleopatras’ gems in comments

The groups I featured on this set come from the French speaking parts of Belgium and Switzerland and include French Beat groups singing in French (not in English). About 10 tracks had been published on the private series “Rocking’ the Twist”, I just added more tracks by the same artists. The result is a mix of often simple and rough sounds (though hardly a fuzz pedal or an electric organ insight) , and tunes that might suffer lacks on the production and arrangement level, but that exactly makes them akin to the Garage group sound, at least to my ears. Francophonic Beats in comments

Once again in the land of Garage (or …of boxes, as US residents would say). I’m happy the groups I‘ve selected hail from nearly all American nations, from LA (Louisiana) to WA(shington). (Nearly) all of the tracks you’ll hear come off 45 singles which have never compiled. Again, I’ve widened the time frame a bit including tracks from the early 60s one might tag “Pre-Brit Invasion” as they sound very much alike what you would expect to hear in England’s clubs and caverns at about the same time. I.e. Garage. If these tunes are not your cup of tea, just skip the first tracks of each CD. Moreover, I’ve enclosed some wacky tracks that slightly remind Soul and alike. At any rate, to my ears all groups blast out a highly original, “American” sound. I hope you’ll dig my selection.

Well, I guess it’s about time to commemorate my friend the late Lolly Pope one more time. Continuing his Beat Wunderbar / Tommyknockers series, Rip # 13 yields a good charge of rare, (mostly) never compiled Brit beat. I’ve thrown a few overheard tracks by some better known artists in the mix that are featured on some anthologies, but the bulk of my selection presents groups that have missed any official or private compilation and step into the devoted community for the first time (Sabres, Solitairs, Grasshoppers, Campbelltown Zodiacs, Dedicated Men, Undergrads). I’ve also added some uncompiled budget beaters from the Top 6 and Embassy labels, whose versions will , although close to the originals, freshen up the experience of re-hearing the old staples. In opposite of my last US-compilation which sounded very "American", this here set sounds particularly British, at least to my ears. Which means it stands for that unique, well cradled, well cured, well played, sometimes slightly bizarre soundtrack you would get in the English caves and kellers. But now, let’s humbly plunder the sacristy of the British Beat Church, and follow the Sabers’ advice “Dance little sister, to the Hully Gully Beat”!

You won’t believe it but after only 4 month time we’re back again in the Italian Beat scene with some amazing new entries. . Naturally, when you scrape the barrel of non compiled tracks, you find yourself on the wacky side, so be patient if some songs might sound too stupid or too commercial to your rears, I hope I picked the fun ones tho’. For the rest, in quite chronological order from 61 – 71, you get some never heard gems from uncompiled artists (Spero / Crazi Boys, Pappagoni, Mike Leo Group, Icebergs, Hot Dogs) plus some overheard tracks off rare to find samplers and anthologies. There is no overlaps to any other commercial or private compilation, not even to the collections from the splendid Paradise ofGarage website, tho’ I might have nipped 1 or 2 tracks from Caveman. Finally, I hope you don’t speak Italian (- anyway it’s mostly about love and romance - ), although some songs deliver amazing statements. Like Alberto (CD1, #6)who get his caresses from mamma but runs to his girl when mamma ‘s not around naming her 'vice mamma' (Ti nomino vce mamma) . Remember, we’re in Italy!

I promise next time I read song titles like “Me Make Um Pow Wow”, I won’t click it. Anyway, here’s another load of tunes I really don’t know where to file under, definitely not under "Garage” . Somewhere between Novelties, Blue Beat, Rockabilly, Doo Wop, Budget Beat, Latin, Soul, orchestral pop, Schlager, Crooner, Exotica, even C&W, somewhere in between.…Oddities is the best word that comes into my mind. 4 or 5 artists apart, all names were unknown to me. If you dig The Big Itch series, or the Trashcan CDs, you might like this double set as well, although my time frame is wider (this time, we go back as far as 1955 and end up in the 70s). All in alphabetical order, these tunes have one common denominator: FUN! I hope you dig!

Welcome to the second trip through the Yugoslavian beat land. Admittedly, Yugo groups seem to miss the rough edge (usually, 45s were put out as 4 songs EPs, of which 3 were instros or ballads). And no fuzz pedals around before ’67. On the other hand, the rough edge is created by the stripped to the bone productions (and pressings). Moreover, you’ll get lots of covers, I assume there were no record imports from the UK or even the States then, so this was the only way to hear the newest beat hits in Yugoland. I love the insisting cowbell ( on I call your name), the wild and wacky organ (on I wanna be your man), the exploding drums (on Johhny B Goode), the weird echo (on Satisfaction), and the new wordings (to "Shapes of Things").

I admit, in 66, when listening to the "Euro Hit Parade", and before they started airing the "Italy" part, I used to switch to BFBS or Radio Luxemburg. What would come would mostly be of the “San Remo" festival and song contests (“like Cantagiro”, ecc) organized by national TV stations. Sugary songs that usually start with a glistening string crescendo, followed by a (un)expected silence before the dramatic singer’s attack. Beyond all the kitschy bulk tho’, sometimes there were some flip sides that would show the real and more natural talent and passion of the artists. I hope I’ve picked some of those tracks, still I have to admit we could be too close to the commercial side of it all. But as with all my “Girls with a Beat”, I dig the sexy voices, all through, and the nice picture covers (shown in the booklet attached). All tracks come in simply alphabetical order, the red thread is the unique Italian sound. Spero che piaccia / I hope you dig!

After my "German Twisters" collection (https://michaelvee.livejournal.com/80373.html), an international set was overdue.
When Chubby Checker recorded the Hank Ballard and the Midnighters’ penned b - side “The Twist“ in early 1959, he sure had no idea what he had started. It went immediately no.1 on the national charts, and started 4 (!) years (1960 - 1963) of a craze that would not only sweep the nation but the entire word! A real phenomenon, that is. Don’t trust statements, like The Twist was a short dance craze, since 4 years, in pop music, is an extremely long time span! And the wave stranded on all beaches of the word, from Japan to Chile, from Yugoslavia to Mexico, from the Hillbilly lands to the Austrian Alps. After the Boogiewoogie, such thing had never happened before (and would never repeat itself). Follow up like the Hucklebuck, the Slop, the Mashed Potatoes, the Pony, and the Fly tried to pick up the trail, but to little avail. It just wasn’t the Twist.
What I love about the Twist - and what probably is the secret of its success - , is the fact it can easily be associated with whatever. From Kissin’ Twist to Hound Dog Twist to Blind Mice Twist to Doorpost Twist to Tablecloth Twist, the combination always sounds sharp and makes half of the song.
Another thing I really love of the Twist is it’s innocence. Just pure fun, nothing more. You just had to be a good Twister, and you would get the cutest girl around (at least, twist with her until the cows come home; remember it was long before Ray Davies asked” Girl, I want to be with you / All Day and all of the Night!!!”)
So I hope you enjoy this set which was planned to be some kind of a sideshow to the phenomenon, focusing on rare and unusual versions from all the world that prove the immense conceptual and musical variety of a genre which, unfortunately, is much overseen and underestimated. And don’t send me your complaints and psychopathic counsel’s bills. Remember, it’s like Arch Hall says in “Twistin’Fever": “The doctor couldn’t fix her / ‘Cos he’s a Twister, too”. So let’s twist again brothers and sisters, Viens twister avec moi, vamos todos a bailar el Twist, Twist noch mal mit mir, Balliamo tutti il Twist!

Back again in Garageland! This new set starts off with some proto Beat tracks (from 59 and 61) Rockabilly aficionados might be familiar with, and I don’t think they’ll complain. What follows are unheard 45 platters (I think), a live track and some tape recordings. All, more or less, in chronological order, so you can witness how Beat went to Pop and finally took the psychedelic road (before fizzling out in Super Group Rock, Art Rock, Classic Rock, Folk Rock, Hard Rock, Prog Rock, Rock Rock, …..). As you can expect, you get quite a hodgepodge of genres, mostly unissued tracks, while, exceptionally, I’ve thrown in the mix some tracks available to download (thanks Alona Dream’s Records for posting them on youtube). Bienvenue in the land of the Croques Monsieur! For the fourth time now, here’s more tunes from France. Unlike other nations, France didn’t have 1000s of Garage groups spread all over the nation , but quite a lot of more or less famous artists, most of them which a long string of well recorded (in professional studios), well promoted (via national TV and mags), and well produced singles, usually, 4 song EPs (which came in 4coloured picture envelopes), plus many LPs. Of all those records, many have been anthologized before, but as it will be difficult to get those collections outside of France, I occasionally have included some tracks that are too good to be missed (and sure won’t annoy you even if repeated). I hope that episode # 4 will shed another brilliant light on the brilliant (and elegant!) French combos and artists , with their unique way of interpretation (notwithstanding the language barrier). I also hope you speak a little French to understand the truly hilarious lyrics of many tracks. Pourée de Pommes de Terre, yeah!!!

Croques Messieurs in commets

I admit we’re scratching the bottom of the Barolo barrel, tho’ I’m sure the pieces we found are all more than enjoyable. An d they should be all uncomped! Mostly, this time they come from (in)famous singing stars which may have had hits or won at the many San Remo blueprint "Festivals" of Italy, many of whom enjoyed a more or less long career, but accidently left the commercial road for a one off shot. We’ll meet 12 yo boys (Mauro Ingafù), ladies who did a desperate latest jump on the Beat train (Wanda Romanelli), Italian singing guys from Spain (Los Marblau) and Germany (Wiking Groth) (both with heavy accents), only Yugoslavian pressings (Ennio Galli), and 2 unfortunate guys who died in a car crash at the age of 19 (Jean Luk) or were electrocuted while taking a shower (Claude Francois, RiP). All in alphabetical order, this time, from 1962 to 1969 which creates a varying, mostly sunny soundscape with blows of fresh winds, and, sometimes, off the road cover versions that even top the original (like I’m a Believer, Sha la la la, and Barbara Ann) I have to thank my friends from the fb page “Beat& Rock’n’Roll Italiano” (www.facebook.com/groups/160225698043329/) for many good leads to uncomped Italian nuggets (read: URL and yt links, all mentioned in the booklet). Also, for those who don’t speak Italian, I’ve translated the group’s name s and song titles, to give a slight idea of what the song might be about (from "When I was a baby " to Ugolino’s massively distorted "Oh whadda lovely day ‘t was”). The fact that instros don’t use words makes the music become more intimate. Like two people who understand each others without speaking. And I guess not many words will be needed here, talking about instros. If you’re hooked on rare instrumental guitar music, with some wicked organs and crashy drums maybe, then you’ve hit a gold mine! (Mostly) all of the 180+ tracks you get here have never shown up on the many official and private compilations so there’s a good chance you’ll hear them here for the first time ever. I’ve skipped the “surfy” instros, as there will be a “Surfer’s Instros” set soon. The rest is the uncomped best from groups that hail from all edges of the globe, delivering a tasty, gutsy, and varying instro sound. I’m sure you’ll dig.
