US283a/b/c – Tapas from Spain

$

¡Hola muchachos y muchachas! I have to ask pardon to my Spanish friends, since it’s a very long time I’ve published a collection of rare Spanish Beat. (UC080 El lado Espanol, in 2016).Anyway, here’s a triple set I hope you’ll dig. I’m particularly happy I’ve found quite a few of never considered groups and underrated / unknown artists plus many uncomped tracks by the better known ones. Quite exceptionally, I’ve ripped a few tracks off some anthologies by Rama Lama Records and Munster Records which are doin’ a great job over there and I hope you’ll order out of their catalogs. As you’ll note, many groups are from the Catalan region (which claims independency, right now), and many hail from the Spanish islands such as Mallorca and Gran Canaria. Unlike most other nations (such as France where 80% of the recording artists hail from - or at least recoded In  - Paris), Spanish groups not only gave concerts in the bigger cites but regularly played the clubs, hotels and touristic facilities of the Spanish Islands and the Costa Brava. You will hear some special chord changes (E—F – G) that are based on the Flamenco and deliver  a “classical” Spanish approach appreciated by both locals and tourists. Finally, I’ve thrown some of the wackier sounds on the Tapas-buffet, and I hope you won’t mind to end up in a joyful, brass-fired carnival march. Espero que disfrutes! Olè !

eYegeNeYe – Spanish EPs , lo Mejor

$

De nuevo: Beat de España, all tracks uncompiled and selected from 25 original EPs recorded by the better known groups between 1963 and 1967. Spanish EPs came with glossy 4c-picture covers but usually, and unfortunately, they featured 1 commercial (hit?) track, 2 much softer (ballads?, kitsch?) songs and in most cases just 1 song that better reflects the group’s true spirit and original song list they played from at concerts. I tried to pick those last ones, skipped most of the many (Beatles, Stones, etc.) cover versions and the overall hearing experience sounds fresh and fabulous, at least to my ears. As I mentioned before, many of the tracks were reissued and anthologized by Munster Records and Rama Lama Records and others, and I’m sure you will browse through their catalogs to order more of your own fave groups. Huge thanks go out to the runner of youtube channel 33 45 who posted all of the EPs (at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn98MWp5GVAyyJIW0Lip8iw/featured) ; you will find more interesting stuff in his list. UC284 – Cool Canada – part 4

Salut, mes copains! Someone asked for it, so here’s more rare and solid beat from Canadian groups and artists. For a bug of my scanner, the printout of the booklet came out in faded  colors like light green and ice blue which create a perfectly "Cool" look.  You might be familiar with some of the ensembles  presented here,  especially if you’re Kanukistan resident, still I hope you don’t get bored by some repeaters. Also, I’ve found some unissuied “live" recordings (fake and real live!) that put some pepper on the steak. Plus , inevitably, a few French language versions that deal quite well with the originals,  even if the Green Tambourine morphs into a Little Martian.  Enjoy the Canadians!
PS. You should say thanks to all bloggers ad youtubers  I mentioned in the booklet, especially Benjamin Shulman and lesdemsoul bramhs

Master Monster J.R. Williams, infamous for his terrifying art and his wacky (instro - ) compilation series, wrote me:  “… I never shared this online...it's an extra -large file, which I created as a pledge drive premium for WFMU radio. You’re certainly welcome to share your selection at your page”.
So from 100+ tracks I have selected those missing in my archive, and put it all to 2 CDs , and the roary result is AMAZING!  Of course, it’s an homage to Davie Allan,  overdue and well deserved. I think he's one of the 3 top guitar players (with Chuck B and George Harrison), always creating along the main melody line, never predictable, never banal, sometimes over the top sometime warm and elegant, with sounds that range from deepest Fuzz to Cristal Clear, and from sitar to frog sounds. I guess no other guitar player can show off such variety. Probably, the fact there was no objective to deliver HITS, broadened the scope and opened his playing to (private) fun.  A lot of merits go to his band, his sound engineer and his producer,  of course. I’m sure you ‘ll dig a weird soundtrack, and the original promo spots will add some chili to the maniac meal! Biker flic fiends be warned! We don’t take prisoners! (we’ll eat them!)

Here’s the original introduction notes by JR Williams himself (from wfmuichiban.blogspot):
“As far as I know there has never been a comprehensive collection of music from these particular genres of film.  For twenty years or so the only way to hear many of these tracks was via playing the original vinyl releases.  In 1988 the Blast First label released British artist Savage Pencil’s LP compilation ANGEL DUST: MUSIC FOR MOVIE BIKERS.  Some time later, US artist Jim Blanchard put together a similar collection on CD  -  R titled EAT MY ANGEL DUST! BIKER SOUNDTRACK ESSENTIALS: 1966   -   1971.  A number of original soundtrack albums from biker  -  related films have subsequently been re  -  released on CD.  Enthusiasts like myself who’ve wished to expand their collections have pretty much had to seek out the individual albums (either on vinyl, CD, or as digital files), then pick and choose the more outstanding tracks (in my opinion, many of these soundtracks have only one or, at most, a few worthwhile tracks included on them).  With this collection I’ve attempted to flesh out the material included in the above mentioned compilations with more of the same, plus some additional tracks from thematically  -  related movie soundtrack LPs (and etc.) of the same cultural period. This isn’t meant to be a “definitive” collection on the subject, by any means, but is probably much more inclusive than anything previously available.  A number of radio spot ads for appropriate films are also included here."

UC285a/b – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - US Garage Gems, Pt. 41

Back again in Garage land my friends, and you’ll wonder how many new nuggets  still turn up. (actually, there’s no dead mines, you just have to get trough swamps of crap). As you might have noticed, I have broadened the limits of the definition slightly, also focusing on genres that others might tag differently (Rockabilly, R&B, Soul, Novelty, Pop…) but, at least to my ears, the tunes I selected all incorporate the genuine Garage stance (or, at least, bits of it, like Fuzz guitar or audience-cheers ) so are worth to be included.
Furthermore, I’ve added a good charge of live tracks and (live / lip sinc) TV and film clips plus some documentary footage excerpts that give my selection an extra kick, like add chili to the steak. Please be patient with the audio quality, still the urge comes through, I’d say. You might want to watch the video clips of the live trax, just digit group name and song title in your youtube browser. Also, all youtube channels and blogs I have ripped from are mentioned in the booklet attached. Thanks a lot chaps, and keep up  you generous work. I hope you all will dig my selection.

UC286 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - Scraping the Beer-Beat-Barrel, Teil 8

$

So we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel for the 8th time, and you will hear more Beer Bietelz, Müsli Stompers and wigged out Wiener Würstchen. I only hope you don’t speak German, it wouldn’t help you in case you’re snobby with the tunes I collected. Mostly all are sung in the German language, many in best German Dada-English. Of course, scraping the barrel means you’ll dig up the usual cover versions, from Land of 1000 dances to Shotgun and from Wooly Bully to Dandy, many recorded for budget labels, some taped at parties. The rest of the harvest is tunes to file somewhere in between Schlager, Pop, Dance-music and Novelty records, hard to classify, hard to appreciate, that is unless you’ve got some kind of a wacky humor like me. In any case, (mostly) all recordings have never been compiled before or even were featured in anthologies, so there’s a good chance you’ll hear them here for the first time (and for sure you would have rejected most of’em in case your heard them on the radio in the 60s). I have added a few tracks that were included in D&J’s fab "Heimatliche Klaenge” series, thanks a lot buddies! More info on the unfortunate artists (plus a few comments) in the booklet attached. Thanks to all bloggers and youtube channels specialized in German Pop! Heidewitzka und Bier Ahoi!

Hail again to my spiritual guide, soul brother and inspiration aka the late The Lolly Pope, famous for his "Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium" compilations and his " Tommyknockers" installments. Doin’ this new selection I was feeling exactly like when we switched tracks and I would sometimes suggest some tunes to include. So I’m sure he will give his blessings and would have chosen each of the rare (and quite definitely uncomped!) Brit gems I am going to share with the devote community. In opposite to my last US Gems CD, this set sounds particularly British, at least I hope so. You’ll meet well known bands (like the Downliners Sect) who were published unbeknownst to them under a different name in Italy (The BlackPanthers), infamous punks who saw their recordings presented as "The Dave Clark Five", famous personalities like Elvis Costello’s own father (as "Frank Bacon"), pre Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull and Barkley James Harvest (forgive me, my Lolly Pope), the original Henry the VIIIth from 1961, Herman’s Hermits playing their asses off Live at the Cavern, (pardon my bad language by using the word “live”), plus a few  audio tracks ripped off from private films and TV-shows. Many bands and artists I had never even heard of; probably the Lolly Pope would have shed some knowledge. As usual, this installment comes with a l0 pg libretto with more information and band pics everybody should humbly read during the Service. So take a deep dive down to the forgotten relics, praise the Lolly Pope above (and his devote servant, Ätzbischof Don Compilatius), and dig this new set of fresh Manna from the British Beat Vaults! Halleluyeah!

UC287 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped – High on Jesus!, pt. 4

$
0
0

Alleluia, and Glory to the watcher of the Holy Vaults’ forgotten treasures, i.e. Don Compilatius myself, who succeeded in digging up 30 relicts I’m sure you’ll want to worship.
Part 4 starts in Italy and arrives – via Germany and the UK – in the US, so it might shed a good light on local differences of the genre. Italy, of course , is not only home of the Vatican but, moreover, had many pastors and parishes who understood the sign of the (Beat-) times giving their young disciples a chance to send out the message and hopefully recruit black sheep. Like it or laugh at it, it is that MESSAGE which inspires the musicians and gives the songs a special strength that differs from the Love, Dance&Romance formula. What also sets the xian groups apart is the fact that they do deliver JOY, at least, if you’re ready to receive their religious messages.
A similar promotion of Xian music happened in the Youth Clubs and Cathedrals in Germany, and mostly England, whereas the States leaned more on the acoustic, folky side but also knew how to merge in traditions close to Choir singing - mostly Gospel and Soul – and sometimes even the church organ!
It was not easy to separate the true from the fake, which means songs which carry a well felt religious content (i.e. the Message) vs. “God-help-me-get-my girl-back”-tunes which may also, in a much simpler way, express a religious content. To avoid remaining doubts I have featured a few of those, decide with devotion.
For the first time  - and much like the great Late Lolly Pope used to do -  I have incorporated some personal comments in the booklet since I hope they may be useful to accompany the holy libretto (don’t take them too seriously, tho’).
So get down on your knees, praise the Lord above, pray hard and ask redemption for your sins!  HalleluYeah!

UC288 a/b/c - Girls with a Beat; Vol. 16

$

I’m happy to see , as usual, girls and ladies from all parts of the globe have gathered here to bring you joy and happiness once again. Even if they sing about their Pekinese dog, I immediately get knocked off the barstool by their fascinating voices and timbres. Like their male counterparts, singing styles vary much ranging from innocent to sultry and from elegant to angry and fro sweet to rough (although they will never sound like BlueCheer, I hope). So the red thread that keeps this set together is the fabulous female voices, and I don’t care about when they were recorded (as long as in the 60s), where they came from and if they were black or white or otherwise colored. So, as usual, since each tune is a gem in its own right, you’ll get them in an alphabetical (not chronological) order which creates nice changes in the overall hearing experience. A few live tracks, and TV-clips, will add extra fun, I assume. Finally, I hope you can deal with this new herd of female animals (in case you’re a man) and you will welcome your soul sisters (in the very improbably case you’re a woman). Get with it, boys and girls, and let me know what is you favorite track!

Welcome to the second volume of Japanese Covers from Flexis. Again, these versions deliver a fresh breeze on famous (and maybe too-much-heard) staples, and what really surprises me once again is the fact that it’s the obvious or slight differences of interpretation that make me understand the Genius of the original songs. Probably  it’s because you learn better from faults than from perfectly done. I ’m aware none of the versions I collected can reach or even top the originals which, admittedly,  would be a hard challenge. First of all, groups have to win the different cultural background, so results will probably be like asking a punk group to do Waterloo Sunset… Secondly, these covers were recorded harshly in no time, mostly with ad-hoc bands (you probably won’t find any info on), and published on Flexi-discs to give away as sweepstakes with mags, hairsprays  and whatever more Japanese pop products. So be patient with bad quality of recording and production. Finally, Japanese musicians had to face the language barrier and they did this by opting for the "short cut"-strategy. Although  they would hardly  understand the words they sang, the message comes through anyway. I’m sure you will dig the funky dada-English which add extra fun to this set. I must say it was not easy to transliterate the Japanese writing into the Western alphabet, and some names of groups and artists are best guess, read Google translations.  Moreover, I had to sort out youtube posts that actually are 80s karaoke amateur singer voicing over backing tracks from the 60s, and coming 99% close to the originals. Last but not least, huge thanks go out to youtube channel   カヴァー天国 who posted mostly all of the ultra rare discs and sure is doin’ a unique job over there in Japan.  But now, let’s all go to the Honda-Ship…

It seems that the river (which might have become a creek) of never compiled 60s Gems is still running fine, since Vol. 41 was posted just a few weeks ago. You might have noticed that there were no more official compilations issued by the big labels in the last years and I’m not sure about the reasons why not to publish new comps with unheard recordings, like the ones I have fished in the net. Copyright issues? Avaricious hoarders who will never share their goodies? Bad audio quality? At any rate, I’m sure you will enjoy 30 more Gems, all uncomped, and all worth to be feature in a compilation with the Garage Gems title. You will meet unknown groups (tracks #1, Alias#1, Tight Little Unit), groups which were really another group (The Manchesters aka The Chartbusters), the One and Only Billy Shears (seems that’s really him!), and P.J. Proby’s hairdresser (track 30; James "Spider" Barbour). In between a few (more or less fake) live tracks from TV. Detailed (i.e scarce) info and flashy band pics in the booklet (Do you ever read them..?). Have fun y’all (and thank all youtube cannels I have mentioned in the booklet)!

Part 12 starts off with a true gem: I Rokketti from Civitavecchia, a group that was made up of (mostly) minor boys (15yo+), recorded live by no other than Sirs Paul McC and George H at the Blaue Peter in Hamburg when they toured Germany for six (!) years time! The tape has been buried in the dreck since 1962 (!) and was found by a German girl friend of the group. Se leggete l’italiano, dovete assolutamente comprare il libro “I Rokketti – Da Piazza Padella alla Reeperbahn – Curzio Editore, scritto egregiamente da loro cantante / bassista MarioPaparozzi.
Most of the artists of this new set were unknown to me, whereas some tracks are picked by some “stars” who left the middle of the road to venture in the Beat-field. I have to thank my friends at the fb page BEAT & ROCK’N’ROLL ITALIANO who have signaled many unheard tracks. Finally, I hope you may speak Italian to understand the lines of the last track which exactly says what I wish for my own funeral, mostly re: my last wish to the girls, I.e. to promise “they’ll give to my friends what they never gave to me….” (feel included!)

UC291 - 292 – Mas Garage del Centro, pts. 1 and 2

This 4 pack is kind of a sequel to Wirtis’ "Rock centroamericano 60s & 70s" 4 CD collection, posted at garagelatino (http://garagelatino.blogspot.com/2017/01/va - rock - centroamericano - 60s - 70s.html#comment - form). (I think it’s still available).  Except of that (and "Psycofasicos de Bolivia"), to my knowledge there has never been a compilation of Garage tunes from Middle America, the "minor" States (well, Bolivia ain’t exactly much minor), so all tracks you get here are uncomped. Initially, I wanted to call this set “Little Latin Losers” since bands from middle America had to face some tough hurdles. Musicians from el Centro were far away from the big record companies and recording studios in LA or elsewhere and had hardly a chance to use studio trickery. So you should not expect flashy drums, pumping organs and mindwrecking guitar sounds. They compensate this by using some strange instruments, much shouting during the recording sessions, and, eventually simply by tiddling with the volume knob during the master mixing, if there was any. Of course you’ll get a few Wooly Bullies and more cover versions, but the best, to my ears,  are the many originals with some great melodies. I’m sure you will dig a deep dive in the 60s scene of Central America, when during the festivity day of the national patron people assisted processions with gay music of all kind. Enjoy! (Ps. I still haven’t discovered what "El Calambrina" means but it must have been a smash hit down there…)

eYeGeNeYe productions proudly presents: - Embassy Budget Beat – 4Shillings and Sixpence at Woolies

Good idea to collect the Embassy Beat tracks. Although 30 songs of Woolworth’s cash in label are present in my own collection, there’s 45 more that have never been compiled and are good fun hearing after 5o+ years. I remember my mother coming home from her shopping with a anonymous “I want to hold your hand” single she bought at Woolies. Of course,  I soon found out that it was not the Beatles, so naturally I scorned it (eventually putting it on the record table many time when no one would watch). We know about the ID of the singers who had recorded for the label before (in a crooner style. mostly) , but who where the Typhoons, the Jaybirds the Starlings and the Beatmen? I guess we never will know, although some album liner notes from Embassy state the Typhoons were “Berry, John, Eddy and Danny“. (For sure, the Jaybirds were NOT the eponymous  Nottingham band led by Alvin Lee, dear discogs). At any rate, they must have been true professional session men, as they had to cover bands from the Zombies to the Pretty Things and songs from "How do you do?"to "Anyway anyhow anywhere". They succeeded quite well with it, playing and singing  in a stunningly fresh style, sometimes even topping the originals (like with “Everything’s alright", "Hubble Bubble", "I’m the one". “The Game of Love"), always close to the original hits although bringing in some sloppyness in playing which makes them sound iike a Punk band, in my ears . I doubt they had a chance to rehearse the songs in the recording studio as productions were done in a rush since the records had to be on the market within a few days. Maybe it’s those slight differences of interpretation that yield the listening fun. Embassy sold their products worldwide, from Canada to South Africa and from Sweden to even  the Lebanon, so I wonder how many people actually bought the singles and EPs, internationally. Probably much more than the ones who bought Freddy and the Dreamers or The Mojos , and the Mindbenders, so the Embassy groups should have their place in the international hit charts. More of the scarce info on the Embassy label in the booklet attached, if you’re interested. But probably you’ll just like to go through the chronological row of (British) hits from 1963 to 1965 (some recorded in shortened versions , as 2 songs had to be pressed on each single side). I have listed 20 more tracks that are missing and I will add a fourth CD to the set if you send them to me.  I hope you’ll enjoy the Best of the Budget Beat Hits!

For the seventh time, back again in Germany and its Beat girls. Actually, more than solid Beat you have to go through a molasses of Schlager (= Hit) tunes you would expect to be played in a beer tent, or at the German Karnival. Nevertheless, I hope I’ve succeeded in picking some amazing songs I bet you’ll dig. We have to thank the girls and ladies from abroad (Bulgaria, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, UK) who give a helping hand. I was stunned that the tunes don’t need to be put in a chronological order, from 63 to 68, but sound fine just one after the other. Probably it’s the female voices that get me hooked all the time the girls deliver. So here they are, from Angelika to Ulla, in alphabetical order, waiting to bring you joy.
