60s (mostly) uncomped

This is a long overdue ode to my all time hero Joe Meek. Back who wrote and produced this tidbit that would soon become probably the most famous instrumental of the 60s worldwide. I wonder if he knew (remember we’re talking about a true genius, tho’) .
I had posted the original 32 tracks set on April27, 2014, and in the meantime I’ve collected more Telstars, so here we go with 60 Stellar Versions (actually it’s only 59 as I had to eliminate 1 track from CD#1 for space reasons (memory space, i. e).

I’m really curious if you manage to listen to all monothematic pieces of this double set. I admit, I had listened to both CDs in a row, then decided to change 2 tracks on CD#1, but I didn’t make it to give one more final listen. Maybe in 5 years time, when I will have completely forgotten about my the updated Telstar effort. So again, buckle up, check ignition, and push the go-go-button! (and don’t send me any more versions, I won’t handle it!)

Telstars in comments

Who would have thought I’ dig up 50 more German tidbits in just 3 months time (volume # 12 was launched in December 2019)? Well, you only have to scratch the Beer-Beat-Barrel deep down to the bottom, sort the wheat from the chaff (i.e. separate the Schlager molasses from the Beat influenced 45s), and then look what’s uncompiled / un-anthologized and what is not: Here’s what is left: overheard and underrated ditties you sure have looked down on in the 60s (would you ever have bought a Lou von Burg or Peter Horton single?). I admit, many tracks of my collection are borderline to Schlager and Humpta, anyway, after 55 years many sound quite interesting and many deliver hilarious lyrics in excellent dada-English the Germans are famous for and I love so much. I packed some spoken bits from the Defa-film “Heisser Sommer” plus a few live tracks and some romantic songs in the mix, I hope you’ll dig (the words to “Der Regen singt ein Lied” and “Straße der Sehnsucht" are actually very nice). Special thanks go out to Maik Murano, Uwe Dieterich, Antenna Mondo X, Dritter Polizist and to Rüdiger Osterman of the Shot Guns (augezeichneter Geschmack und bestes Gespür, meine Herren!); if you browse their youtube channels you might find more appealing sounds from Germany and surrounding nations. Karoffeln in comments

So once more back again and benvenuti in the land of Buccatini e Tarantella! In fact, many of the underrated, unheard or forgotten tracks I’ve collected come from infamous family TV shows, life recordings in famous night clubs (like "I Quattro di Lucca” in La Cappanina / Forte Dei Marmi), odd TV music programs (aired nationally or locally) and also from wacky full feature films. I’m sure when listening to I Rollini, track b12, you won’t feel disturbed by Ann Margret’s lusty squeaks tho’, would you? For the rest, you will get ditties and “jump on the trainwagen” samples by more or less famous artists plus some unheard tracks of the well known groups. The most surprising (and probably weirdest) track probably comes from Piero Focaccia, famous for highly commercial (i.e. cheapo) "hits" and covers your mother would have danced to. He must be a nice bloke tho’ as Mario Paparozzi (of I Rokketti fame) once told me. You’ll also hear a few romantic songs, I mean moody, to make you cry and hope for better times.
A few tracks I’ve included have been issued by some (in)glorious Italian labels as I assume you won’t rush to buy all of their comps and anthologies. Finally,. I’ve napped 2 or 3 tracks from my good friend Caveman he had used for his fab “AttodiForza”series you’ll all know from his ParadiseofGarageBeat blog. I hope you won’t mind repeating. Holá ,mis amigos Beat! We never had a compilation focusing on Argentina groups & artists, so while preparing such, I found the marvelous youtube channel “beat-crazes” with about 400 tracks, mostly all never heard or, at least, never compiled. You sure will dig up more of that visiting the channel. I have picked the tunes that are definitely on the Beat side, tho’ the last third of each set takes us into 1969 and the beginning of the 70s, too (Tunes come more or less chronologically ordered, even if many recording dates were unknown). I’m sure you will dig those later sounds as well, even if they lead us into the happy-tunes-to-sing-by direction (I admit I like). A few exceptions a part (Johnny Tedesco, Bulldogs, Tammy’s, Sandro, Puch Alberto), groups and artists are pretty unknown (out of and also within Argentina) and have been overlooked even by the greediest Garage aficionados. Nevertheless, they deliver a strong beat and great, quite unusual harmonies. Unlike other nations (say Mexico, I found not so many cover versions but mostly original compositions wich may give my selection an extra plus . So disfrutas los Argentinos, amigos (y espera la segunda parte!)

El hampòn e la balzana in comments

It must have been hard times for punk groups under the military regime of Argentina. Some got thrown in jail because they played naked in a public fountain (Los Beatniks), and Sam & Dan are pictured under the gallows and I’m not sure this if it’s a photo stunt? Groups had to change their original names (from The Same to Los Seims) by diktat from the recording company, while others more, playing in a shack with bad wiring, got an electric shock , and since the audience thought it was some kind of an extra kick, they decided for the band name "Los Dangers" (for: Dangerous). And if you they didn’t live in the capital (or move there), you would best forget your dreams of a musical career.
I hope this collection of rare 33rpm 7inch singles (the common format in Argentina) will prove there were some who resisted and insisted.
At least, there were TV shows hosting go go girls plus beat bands, so this double set (which picks up where Argentinian Beat Crazes left us) features several live recordings and play backs taken from TV (watch them perform on youtube channel gatosalvaje61!)
I have napped 2 or 3 tracks from the (crappy) Digging Down Argentina compilation, and a few more come from the fine anthologies made by Munster Music who generously post some of their fabulous CDs on youtube (go and buy!). For the rest, you’ll hear some solid beat by the famous and less famous bands and some unusual beat-alike tunes as delivered by Argentina RnR Rebels and crooners plus many valid efforts by pretty unknown combos you may meet here for the very first time (unless you’re Argentina resident, that is). This set covers tracks from the early pre-Beat years to Bubblegum, focusing on 64 – 67, so it’s very much on the (Argentina) Beat side. I hope you’ll dig.

Since just 4 month ago 30 brand new nuggets have shown up, so it means Garage aficionados can still put their trust in the richness of the US Garage goldmines. Our set starts with some fine dedications to big Bo, tunes coming mostly from overseen (or underrated) 45s. Don’t expect another Pushing too Hard or 96 Tears garage hymns although still all my pretty pieces yield good fun and are worth a hear. My rule of choosing and selecting is very simple: Candidates are either "very good" or "good" or "no good". Rareness factor (i.e. no reissues) and quality standards (composing and executing, not production!) are equivalent, although a few exceptions are made. So be sure all 30 tunes belong to the first two categories, at least in my ears. But be warned: Towards the end, our trip is getting pretty weird, I hope you will survive! Have fun!

Meanwhile, in the Australian bush….. welcome back, for the fifth time, in the land of the Billibong and the chewing gum. As you will notice, Australian / New Zealand garage ranks somewhere between UK Merseybeat and snotty US garage, and you might say it incorporates the best and most essential of both genres. Hardly a horn, and just a few Farfisas, no production gimmicks. Obviously, the technological standards of national recording studios and production facilities were suffering, but you can’t make the same statement regarding the crowd’s enthusiasm and the musicians’ persistence. And even as many groups tried their luck overseas, apart from the exceptional Easybeats, it was not before the Bee Gees and AC/DC that an Australian artist would take off internationally. Anyway, this selection focuses on the uncompiled output of the minor groups, and on my our way down the pit I have found some nuggets by bands you – like me - might never have heard of, such as the Blue Streaks, The Changing Times, The Cyclones and Rick & the Bad Boys (unless you are OZ/NZ resident, that is). All of them, plus a few rare pieces of the better known groups, deliver rough, high energy fueled Beat and Pop music. What makes me wonder is that many singers, tho’ from an English speaking continent, produce the most hilarious examples of Dada wording you can imagine. Fun don’t need studying. I’m sure you’ll enjoy!

Boomerang Beat in Comments

If your collection starts with Pushin‘ too hard and ends with 96 Tears, then this set will most probably best neglected. I’m aware songs about Popeye, Hungarian choruses, Armenian pop music, novelty giveaways, cheapo sampler instros and German Humpta can’t be tagged Garage. At any rate, all tracks I’ve collected have one thing in common, fun. And all tracks excel by an IDEA, which maybe a catchy line, a funny noise, or an unusual environment like space, the jungle, the Arabian desert or days of Peking. It’s because of that Idea you won’t forget my tunes after the first time hearing. Also, you’ll meet lots of interesting animals like apes, frogs, moles, Popeys, Sputniks and Flintstones, and you will learn new useful words such as Oomp Boomp, Macacafoo and Yamasuki. Another unique factor, my non-garage tracks have in common: They can easily be mixed chronologically, a song from 67 can be followed by a record from 58, and I don’t feel disturbed. More than that, the contrast in change of genre and timeslot creates an interesting , variable all-over listening experience. At least to me, as I feel I’m the only one to collect those stupid, childish examples of innocence and unabashed fun (apart from the Cramps’ Lux Interior and the delicious Tittishakers albums, maybe). For the first time, to make this set more accessible, I’ve entered a few comments and some translations in the booklet. I’m not sure you’ll read it, let me know. But now: Yabba Dabba Dooo, and Wooleh Booleh!

ALLIGALLI IN COMMENTS

To celebrate the 50^th edition of this series, many more or less infamous groups and artists have gathered. In first line, some from the 50s and early 60s so too early to be tagged as Garage groups tho’ they all embody the same Garage spirit and kick out the same energy of their later descendants. Our further expedition takes us down into the “real scene” and we can dig up some shiny, unheard or at least underrated, gems such as by Johnny Gee, the Beagles LP or Bumpy & the Jaguars. After the happening, our trip ends softly with tunes that take us to psychedelic meadows, right near (tho’ not too near!) to some hippies and jug bands. I’m proud all tracks of this jubilee set are uncomped with only a few featured on some hard to get anthologies. I’m sure even Garage aficionados will appreciate some fresh tunes you only get here. And we’re far from scraping the bottom of the gold mine, I mean, so let’s wait for volume # 51. Cheerio!

Hallo Beatfreunde! Es ist mir eine Ehre, nunmehr die 8the Folge der Verlorenen Beatmädchen zu präsentieren. Bei meinen Abstiegen in die Goldgrube dringen dann und wann immer wieder Mädchen- und Frauenstimmen an mein Ohr, und sofort werden meine Knie weich und meine Seele kriegt eine Gänsehaut. Auch wenn nicht ohne die Hilfe ihrer männlichen Kollegen, ob an der Schießbude, im Orchestergraben oder am Mischpult. Aber es sind die mal fröhlichen mal traurigen aber immer süßen Stimmen der Girls and Ladies, die dem Ganzen die Krone aufsetzen. Natürlich heißt es stets aufpassen, um nicht in bierseeliger Humpta-Stimmung oder im Festzelt auf der Kirmes zu versacken, aber viele Strophen machen wohl die deutsche Schlagertradition aus und bringen gut zu schmunzeln (und zu trinken). Tatsächlich verblüfft mich immer wieder die poetische Absicht der deutschen Verseschmiede, und ich werde mir bewusst ,dass mir ihre oft unschuldigen, scheinbar einfachen Zeilen („…Einsamkeit ist Mangel an Gelegenheit" oder „..das Glück kommt zu dem nur, den es mag“) (Fortes Fortuna adiuvat) mehr sagen als es die beste deutsche Dichtergarnitur vermag. Auch wenn es immer um das eine Thema geht ( er liebt mich / liebt mich nicht mehr / liebt mich schon wieder). Es wird schon werden! Hauptsache, die Sache hat Schwung (und das Booklet ist vollgepackt mit vielen spannenden Autogrammkarten und Portraitfotos!) Ich wünsche viel Vergnügen!

This is definitely too good and too funny not to post it! All tracks come from youtube channel VinylFun and the name couldn’t have been chosen better. I promise, each track I’ve picked is better that the next, and you won’t keep from laughing about discs melted to the table, Chinese chop suicide, c-sides and sea-sides, unreliable geezers, and impossible names like Engelbert Humperdink (instead of Fred) . All tracks (except one) come from the UK and stand for a British tradition of ‘fun’ records (spoken or vocal) that is much different to that one of the American “Novelty” records. From Peter Sellers to Marty Feldman and even Benny Clark, I have selected 32 vocal recordings, all with a swing, and many with electrical gueetars. You will hear singers stepping out of the chorus, dropping their sneakers to follow like a shadow, and locked in the echo-box. My set ends with a lovely version of that unforgettable “End of the Season”, as originally done by … the Kinks! I still wonder what’s funny about Benny Hill’s poised "Garden of Love” and “Andalusian Gypsies” and were the 'Boom Oo Yatta-Ta-Ta' and the 'Rama Lama Ding Dong' and the “Pop Shewhupshewhup” went. You will find out.

Around and around and up and down we go again! You asked for it (otherwise you would have skipped this page), and now it’s too late: You have to get through 100+ versions of Twist songs and so many versions of Let’s Twist again, Go Kart Twist and YaYa Twist. As I already commented on part 2, this set too proves that the Twist should be regarded as a genre in its own rights, a global phenomena that swiped the world for 3 years at least. “BaBa PaPa ..Twist!” was the winning pattern to mix with whatever comes to mind, and the result is always hilarious, innocent fun. Twisters in comments

After more than 4 years have passed since my "More Pigtrad!” compilation (UC125), time was overdue for the Ultimate Pigtrad collection. As the Danish 60s scene is widely (one might say: completely) covered by various record labels (Frost, Grufus, Universal) and series (Jacks Beat Anthologies, Viking Beat, Beatkillers, Absolute Hit House, Pigtradsmusik, ecc), it was hard to pick some tracks that have not been considered yet. So I concentrated on the "minor", lesser known groups and their overheard output. Of course, Danish resident aficionados will most probably be familiar with many of the tracks I selected; still I hope repeating doesn’t hurt and you will also find some never heard 45s and sound clips. Like the live-tunes of the Ladybirds who are the stars of this set, of course, thus I have honored them with 4 tracks and some tasty pics on an entire page of the 13 pg-booklet.
For the rest, all information comes from the unique archive "Danish Rock, Pigtrad and Beat 1958-68” (http://www.dk-rock.dk/) which has done a great job entering all (at least nearly all) Pigtrad groups together with a bio and full discography. If you digit the group / song names one by one in the youtube browser, you will surly find more uncomped goodies. Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy my set! A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin’ On!

I’m afraid, my friend the late great Lolly Pope will draft up an apostolic exhortation to reproach me for my short fallings. In fact, he rarely repeated tracks from anthologies and only exceptionally he put more tunes by the same group on one same set, and I have walked that way of exception. Up to 4 tracks from the same group, and several which have appeared on some rare anthologies which I’m sure you don’t want to hear all the way through but only the tunes that sound more in the Beat vein. In between, of course, many unknown groups and rare tidbits from acetates. Maybe someone can shed a light on them. My top group on this selection is The Mersey Beats from Lillipool, I found an unreleased tune and some wacky photos you might enjoy.. So I hope my Pope will be generous with his humble Postulatius and forgive me that this set is breaking the rule of reliquies , comprehending that they all are worth to be picked up from the holy catacombs to be served to the community. I’m not sure if there are any prairies in Canada, but , somehow, the picture might give an idea of the more “rural” beat sounds of the nation. So here we are back again in the bilingual lands (besides Belgium and Swiss). Of course, in Quebec and Ontario there was a big need of French adaptments of the hits of today (yesterday), so you’ll hear many covers on this set I hope you’ll enjoy. Also, I’ve thrown some live recordings and TV appearances in the mix, and there’s lots of originals as well. To my best knowledge, none of my tracks have been compiled or issued on anthologies, Canadian productions apart, maybe. At any rate, this set, as usual, comes with a nice booklet featuring bios, unseen band pix and label shots. I’m sure someone out there will appreciate. Let me know.

A quick glace on the menu (Whoo! I Mean Whee!) will give you an idea of what will be served. But you’re wrong! It’s goin’ to get much worse! With a third of the tracks coming from the 50s, I guess we might be out of scope of my 60s Uncomped concept. I just wonder why the “funny tunes” tradition stopped after "They’re coming to take me away” and “Snoopy vs. the Red Baron" in 1966 (heroes like the Bonzo Dog Band a part). Seems there was no more space for humor in music and pop was getting deadly serious. What got left on the wacky road is not only some good laughs but, more importantly, some wild, original poetry and some great musicianship. So to fill up the gap, I created 2 new sequels for Vinyl Fun#1 which came for the same yt channel and was all UK. This time, I’ve gathered tracks from the US (mainly) and you wonder who bought those silly records. Obviously, someone must have liked them and I guess they were spun at many parties, shown on TV and given away as promotional freebees. So welcome to Kwazy Wabbit Wock and Woll, Radioactive Mamas, Bouncing Rubber Biscuits, Termites, Roaches and Bolshoi Pigs like me who spin funny records. Well, scraping the bottom of the barrel means you will have to make your way through molasses of Schlager kitsch Germany is (in)famous for, just to be surprised to hear that much appreciated Schlagerstars like Michael Holm and Peter Beil occasionally jumped on the Beat wagon. So if you’re lucky you’ll find some shiny nugget ditties that are well worth to be part of a 60s Uncomped (Garage) compilation. Stars of our set are Jimmy Fields aka Bobby Stern aka Teddy Parker (who delivers 4 nice cover versions), and Mike Roger, a forgotten fighter who unbelievably still misses acknowledgment. (Still I wonder how he managed to start the song with “You’re too fat for me” ending it with “you ain’t too fat for me”. You might hear more Meisterstücks from him the follow up of this series. This set’s Time rage starts in the Elvis and Cliff Richard imposter’s era and ends with a little bit of Soul and even Bubblygum. I am sorry for the ones who do not speak German to understand some perfect lyrics adaptments of UK/US hits, as in Liebe Kälte noch als Eis (Love even colder than ice), Peter Beil’s "Weitergeh’n", Mrs. Brown (who owns a flower shop and has a beautiful daughter), or "Dir fehlt ein Boy" (You need a boy), but, most of all, I’m sorry for who might miss some melancholic lines as “the rain talked to all trees / and he whispers with the wind / ahaha” which every time gives me the goose bumps. But as music is international I’m sure you’ll dig this set anyway. Let me know, I need some comfort. Toodeloo!
