eYeGeNeYe presents: Istanbul Radyosu

$

0

This is what I call true gems you only get at this little site here (and at youtube Çelebi Rock): All songs were aired between 1965 and 1967 on the Istanbul Radio, recorded live and In an audio quality you wouldn’t aspect. I understand, the procedure of presentations was: a fanfare (!),( I’ve mixed some example in), the radio host’s introduction to the various band members, and the announcement of the song title spoken by the group’s singer himself (probably as the English titles were too difficult to pronounce for the host), followed by the performance of the song, often a bit longer than the 3 min. format, embedded in long applauses by the audience. The Turk versions , sometimes, differ a bit to the originals, and I wonder if this is because of different harmonic scales between Asia and the Western world, or , simply, as not all members had had the possibility to listen to the originals which probably were teached to them by the only member who was lucky enough to own (or to tape) the onrigial British or American 45s. And friends of Dada–English (like me) will get an extra kick, promised.
PS: I will stay on the Turkish track, and my next compilation will be on that marvelous nation and its pop scene on the border between East and West.

UC327 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - Bosporus Beat

$

As promised, here’s more uncompiled tracks from the Bosporus. As the Turkish 60s scene has been quite meticulously covered by various labels (most of all, the Altin Microfon series) it was not an easy task to dig out more, unheard gems, so prepare for a version of “Jerico” in double speed,  and the pauses in Hippy Hippy Shake. As in about 1967/68 Turkish groups (rightly) felt they had to get over the English language-hurdle, they started to sing in Turkish, incorporating elements of (mostly Anatolian) folk music, and Psychedelia, of course.  Exceptionally the last 5 tracks on this set come are from the early 70s, but don’t be afraid, no heavy rock here! It all changed soon later when the Islamic regime took over, and musicians were spied on, accused for undermining the political and cultural system, and even thrown in jail. Still, until today Turkey can boast a rich bag of dance and pop music, and Rock. I hope you’ll dig my selection and don’t be disturbed by the record sleeves that might show the artists on horses, or dressed in traditional costumes of the deserts of Anatolia. Remember we’re in the mythical and mystical land of the Capadoccia, translated “Land of beautiful horses”.  Heya!

Interlude: Eden Kane

$

This is an exception to my site’s concept as all tracks come from the same artist, Eden Kaine (and the Downbeats). I was stunned this man, although a large outing, is most underrated and doesn’t even have a decent anthology. So I decided to step in. I guarantee it’s all first rate pre beat and beat tunes that never have been comped before (except “My little Sue” on "John, Paul, George; Dave. Brian, Tony & More”). Image a teenage pop singer inspired by Cliff Richard and Tommy Roe but with much more personality than his colleges, say Billy Fury or Adam Faith. Although he enjoyed a few minor hits and charted n#8 with the marvelous "Boys Cry”, his third single, he seems to be forgotten now. I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
PS: I will delete this file in a few days to avoid any copyright infringement claim, so get it while you can! (22 tracks listed only in booklet).

U328 a/b – Scraping the Beer-Beat-Barrel. Teil 12

Who had thought that no longer than 2 weeks after our last scraping tour, here we are back again with Teil 12, and it’s even a double pack! When I found Herbert Jentsch’s youtube channel I knew I had hit a gold mine! Big time! 52 uncomped, unheard and until now unappreciated little gems from the German (Swiss, Austrian, and GDR) underground, or, mostly, from the Beat stand of the Schlager market. In one month time, Herbert has posted about 2,000 tracks (!) and he told me it was his third attempt after youtube closed his channel twice. That’s what I call tenacious!  So prepare for the Polka, The Jenka and the Hokey Pokey and pat the back of  many more or less infamous Schlager stars you wouldn’t expectto board the beat train at least once in their career. Actually, I should have named this compilation “Scraping the Schlager Beat Beer Barrel” since that’s where the bulk of the tracks I collected come from. Stars of our set are Die Nordwinds (with my long time favorites "Arme kleine Sheila" and "Heisser Sand") and The Rebel Guys with 3 uncomped beauties.  I have translated some lines of the lyrics for all my non-German speaking friends, so they get an idea of what the songs are about.

Thanks go out to Uwe Dietrich and Dieter Driese who run the fabulous fb forum “Sie nannten es Deutscher Beat” and to Herbert Jentsch, who all must be a leading connoisseur of the German Beat scene, and I’m sure the diggin’ will go on down….

UC329 – US Garage Gems, Vol. 52

$

Back again with more US Garage gems after our last set that was posted not even 2 month ago. Which means, the river of uncompiled nuggets might be a creek now but is still running. Again, you’ll meet all unknown / forgotten / underrated bands and artists (except Steve Alaimo, and Bobby Comstock, RiP), and you’ll also hear a few unreleased acetates, and audio clips from TV shows. This set features 3 groups of the same moniker (Escorts, Continentals, Hi-Boys), thought they’re all different combos. As usual, we start in the pre-Beat era of the early 60s with some tunes I file under “Garage”, and we stop our expedition in 1968, so the all over sound is quite rough and a-kickin’, no lame tear teasers and folk ballads here. Finally we have to thank all you tubers listed in the booklet who generously decided to share their treasures, especially some 60s Beat aficionados as Jane DeNeefe, Scott Johnson, Justin C, downstate sounds, Linda Lee, and lexingtunes (Shawn Chambers of the lexingtunes site has written a good book on “The Vinyl Years of Central Kentucky"), For the rest, I’m still wondering if The Bifocals you see on the cover are all wearing the same black rimmed spectacles, or is it some window pane joke glasses. I’m afraid, we will never know…

UC330 - 60s (mostly) Uncomped - Hebraic Highs

$
0

Who would have thought? As far as I’m aware, the only compilation on Israel in the 60s is the (quite boring) CD "Beat Music Festival" bythe Hed-Aryi label, so this set takes a quite unique stand.
Beyond the Wailing Wall in the 60s, there were not many night clubs and recording studios for Pop music, nor was there a vast offer of modern (Western) instruments and amplifiers. Even though the import of Western Pop music elements had happened some years before, when Eastern folk first time was mixed with RnR. But first you had to electrify your Bouzouki and play concerts with one mike to sing and one more in front of the guitar. But there were a few courageous combos who delivered some fine tunes. Have in mind that at a time when Jimmy Hendrix stunned the Western world, in Israel they still dabbled with Woolly Bully. Our 6’30” introduction tune presents the star of this set (you see him on the cover) who came from Greece, settled in Israel, played concerts for Moshe Dayin and Ben Gurion, was suspected of being a spy, flew to NYC where he opened a night club soon frequented by Frank Sinatra and Anthony Quinn, got a cocaine habit so his club was raided by the FBI and he got a 2 year jail sentences, and in the bitter end finally died under “suspicious circumstances” in Romenia. (just to help you to get in the right mood, that is. Many Israeli groups and artists had to go abroad to cut a record (USA, UK, Austria, Germany, Greece ) (although the Sing Sings were Brit boys who tried their luck in Israel), and In the middle of my mix there’s various samples of the rare and uncomped recordings. Our Heraic set ends with a song by a troupe dressed up in military uniforms (seems they sing against he war, tho). You will hear. Huge thanks for most of the tracks go out to youtube channel yt דודיפטימר , and to dudipedia.wordpress.cominfo (in Hebrew!) and pics. eYeGeNeYe presents: Dance Crazes

$
0
0

I guess the best thing to do is put your dancing shoes on, get yourself some cocktails (no beer allowed!), and go down with it! 84 specially chosen dance craze tunes are another excellent example of the innocence and fun in the (early) 60s. You just had to pick whatever happens, a car tire, a lamppost or a boomerang, and it’s gonna be a groovy "Do the Boomerang" tune. What more fun do you want from life? But, on the other hand it was a bitter serious affair, as everybody wanted to launch a world wide hit like Chubby Checker and Little Eva did, so no slouches here, and no fillers! Maybe we can add some handclapping and wild girly choruses. My set comes in alphabetic order of the Dances, I’ve thrown some better know blasters in but mostly concentrated on the little known Meisterstücks. In the booklet attached, I’ve printed out some of the dance instructions that often were shown on the back cover of the records and a list of more than 600 Dance Crazes of the 60s. So tie my hands, I’m tempted to digit those dance titles for a further search. But for now, I hope you’re ready to learn and listen to some gorgeous, wacky, genius dance craze rockers! Do the Kangaroo! (You’re lookin’ good!)

I told you you should have handcuffed me and put me in a straight jacket, but now it’s too late: I used the list of 600+ dance crazes (as published in the booklet of Vol.1), and here we are with 93 excellent tunes more, mostly uncompiled ditties (except 12 tracks from my own archive you might be familiar with but sure will love to hear once again). Just like Vol. 1 , I focused on the lesser known versions done by lesser known artist (except stars of Dance Craze like Chubby Checker and the Kingsmen). What I learned to love about Dance Craze fad  is three things: First, it tags both as Garage and as Soul, being neither one nor the other genre; second it mixes black and white (artists), and third, it showcasts both male and female voices the same, which is quite a rare thing in music ain’t that so? And lastly it’s the rough sloppyness of the production (recalling Garage 45s in frat sound), always over the top but with a (maybe stupid) IDEA and played by combos that are sharp and tight.  At any rate, I hope each track I selected will make you jump up from your barstool, grab your partner and let me see you shake a tail feather Baby!
PS: I left out the Twist and the Hully Gully since there are special sets / series in my own collection (search this site). I also left out instro tracks.
PPS: Dance Crazes Vol. 3 is work in progress…

UC331ab - 60s (mostly) Uncomped - Beat from the Boot, pt.15

Back again in the land of the Boot, for the 15th time now. I assume all Garage aficionados will sample Caveman’s compilations of the splendid and comprehensive "Atto di Forza“ series which has arrived at #45 by now(!).I avoided overlaps which means you’ll probably hear all 50 tracks gathered here for the first time after 50 years. Of course I had to go through a molasses of orchestrated morte and amore schmaltz ballads but underlying there is still a few nuggets worth listening with combos that were completely unknown to me, like Mike Sands and the Sandmen, Willy & the Internationals, The Uragans and I Delfini di Pisa . And I’m not scraping the bottom of the Barolo barrel, you’ll get an interesting mix of tunes that vary from early Rockabilly to Novelty songs ad from Beat to Psychedelia, plus an info and photo filled booklet.  I’m sure you’ll dig, let me know.
PS Thanks go out to my friends at the "Beat and Rock Italiano“ fb - site for digging deep, and specially to Enzo Bellocchio

UC333 - Cabinet of Horrors

$

Welcome to the Cabinet of horrors, right on time before Halloween. Hosts at this year’s Mummy’s Hop are the Wolfman, Frankenstein, Dracula, and his son, though special visitors The Daleks from outa space have announed they’ll participate, too. I admit, working for weeks on monster sounds compilations, I feel like beeing right in the midle of it, and I expect many strange things actually might come to happen! Like Vapires? Zombies? Voodoo? Mummies? King Kong and Mr. Hide? After all books beeing written, all films been shot and all vinyl recorded on the monstruos argument, one should think that someting, in the end, might be relay on facts. Finally, our dinner of horrors is honored by the Devil in person, who will invite you to the homefire of Hell. I’m not stunned by his presence at the monsters’s table:  After all, if you think of it, if there’s God there must be the Devil, too, right? Probably the best advice is to follow the devil’s own suggestion to Bruno Martini: "Don’t go to work tomorrow / take that blonde girl with you / grab all the winebebottles from your cellar / and Hell doesn’t seem to be THAT bad at all!" So I will leave you alone in the company of bloodthirsty monsters, and I hope you will appreciate the various corpses of the menu (mostly all of the terrifying tunes are uncomped!). Though while you step down to the Cabinets, right under the Vaults of Horror, and sit down at the table right next to Igor: Always remember: the main course is YOU!

UC334 – 60s (mostly) Uncomped - Pop & Soul from Canada

$
0
0

To my ears, this collection is full of true gems! In the post-Beat period (67 – 70), the francophone Canadian teen music and pop market evidently flinged out a huge load of  not only cover versions but also originals. Most of the tracks I have collected are orchestrated or, at least, brass backed, often supported by heavy handclapping and coruses,  and many are affine to soul sounds. You will also hear some of the later efforts of familiar Canada groups like Les Hou-Lops and Les Mégatones, but the bulk of the recordings come from more or less famous Canadian singers and singeresses, and are their best outings while most of the rest beats the commercial path, I means highway. The alphabetical order creates a loose but exiting variety between pop, soul, and girl singers, I recon. No info on the artists, this time, but many nice cover pics and photo shots in the booklet!
Exceptionally, all tracks of this double set come from the youtube channel run by DjDedales who has great taste and a good instinct for uncompiled goodies, so thanks a lot mate.  understnad it’s an ongoing channel, which means there probably will be a Volume #2 , some day. For the time being, dig Canada’s greatest examples of Pop and Soul!

eYeGeNeYe presents: GarageBeatnick’s all Uncomped Beauties, pt. 4

$

Heureka! Here’s the real thing, I mean Garagesounds raw & pure, true nuggets, and 100% uncomped (both on private and commercial comps). All tracks are taken from youtube-channel Garagebeatnick (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfdsnogZmOQJS57c8vk0iUQ),  and we don’t know who’s behind that, personally.  At any rate, our mate must be a leading connoisseur  with an excellent instinct to dig up uncompiled 45s (I wonder if he actually owns the original vinyls?) , present often forgotten flip sides of widely compiled Garage classics, but also platters from groups that were completely unknown  to me. Many question marks on recording years and provenance (can anyone shed a light?), and just a few band pics and labelshots prove the rareness of the selection.  Most of the tunes beat a slightly moody path, but don’t fear, no lame tearjerkers here.  So let’s applaud Mr. anonymous the Garagebeatnick  whoever he may be , and let’s hope he’ll post  more rare gems in the next future.  In the meantime, enjoy!

UC335 60s (mostly) Uncomped; Scraping the Beer-Beat- Barrel, Teil 13

I admit the "uncopmed" claim of my series must be slightly widened to allow some exceptions. Good to know there’s some crazy people sharing my job in scraping the bottom of the goldmine, I mean beer barrel. My friends at the oldmelodies / wingsofdream blogspot  (http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/) are arrived at # 222 of their complete collections of the output of small record labels "Heimatliche Klänge". Like the tiny Royal Splendid Record label on #217. I’ve ripped off a few tracks that seemed to fit in perfectly in my set, so if you follow that series you might be familiar with those tunes (but I hope you won’t mind repeating). As expected, my set includes some efforts that are on the borderline to Schlager, but there’s some genuine beaters as well. The rarest of it all is probably the last track, with wordings penned by Nicaraguan priest, poet and Minister of Culture of the Sandinista-Movement Eduardo Cardinal. As a minister , he was banned from the catholic office by Pope Wojtyla, tho’ Pope Francesco did revoke  the ban. In 1972 he worked with some Xian people in Germany who issued a complete (and rare) album that excels by its strange and most original lyrics, sung in Spanish and Deutsch.  Never thought that scraping the German Beer Beat and Schlager Barrel I would end up talking about a priest.  A any rate, enjoy!

eYeGeNeYe productions: Psychedelic Promos – The Going Thing

Welcome to the word of jingles, promos and radio spots that were aired in the 60s to advertise soft drinks, jeans, cars, milk shakes, deos, shoes, bowling alleys and department stores. What makes this double set  most appealing, to my ears, is the fact that the recording groups and musicians obviously felt free to express themselves, maybe giggling around and inventing new words to it,  as they were not expected to deliver a hit record that would trouble the charts. Thus, behind the commercial intent, I can hear the “original idea” of the groups, condensed in 1 minute, all finishing with the same promotion jingle, played very differently tho’ in each group’s very own style. And I’m not surprised Jan & Dean and Jay & The Americans delivered their commercials, but I’m stunned about the “anti-establishment” groups like The Airplane, Canned Heat and also the Who that didn’t hesitate to do the same. In their own “psychedelic” way, of course.
All tracks on my set are picked off the 8 volumes of the original series “Psychedelic Promos &  Radios Spots", I’ve selected out the latter that are mostly presenting the artists’ concerts and albums (so they sound boring to me) . Instead, I’ve collected about 100 “groups’ versions”, mostly all  clocking in at 1 minute time. And that’s what makes the set interesting and varying, I guess, continuously changing in style and sounds. I have skipped promo tracks featured on the RockBeat’s CD "1960s Radio Commercials" (I hate overlaps). You can download all 8 volumes of “Psychedelic Promos &  Radios Spots" at  https://archive.org . Thanks to the unknown) compiler). But now, put your Monkey boots on, spread yourself with Ban deo, freshen up with “7up the Uncola” , get yourself a Partridge Wiener and enjoy the innocent commercial world of the 6os. BaBaRaRaCuCuDaDa!

Are you man ( o woman) enough to stand 4 versions of La Bostella (my all time fave dance fad, I might do a compilation of that tremendous tune that makes everybody rolll about the dance floor), and Hoppel Poppel? If so, you’re my friend since you probably will live the same experience most tunes of my selections deliver: the song gets stuck into your ears, and it won’t even leave you during all the day.  Quite nicely, my artists hail from all wacky angles of the word, even Algeria, China, Japan, Hungary and Finland, tho’ predominately America, Italy and Germany.  Of course, if you understand the “lyrics”, it will surely enhance the fun, but I like songs the same even though I hardly understand a word of them  (like "Rail Road Track" or "She’s Winner”).  I admit I was not sure to include Peter Hinnen , the Medium Terzett and may others more. Anyway, I think they are funny so they’re in. Have big fun with Space Cadavers,  Stuttering Henry, Foo Man Choo, Cholley-Oop, Draculina and stolen Coconuts!
