Intermezzo – Juanita Banana!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! This one is for the hardcore-fiends of 60s music. After 26 versions of Juanita you won’t be sure weather you’re a boy or a girl… I hope you can cope with it, I love when it comes to Juanita’s daddy’s desperate attempt to sing like a real opera-virtuoso / to get hip. However, thinkin’ it over, this compilation seems like the prefect soundtrack for your drunken frat-parties, and the bold rhythm-sections with prominent brass definitively bring the best Mod-shakers in mind, don’t they? Half of the songs were posted by the wonderful Probe is Turning-On the People-site (http://www.philxmilstein.com), I just added some more hilarious tracks I found in my collection (of Beat-music, not of Juanita B!) and created a booklet to it. So prepare for the worst, I deny all liability so don’t send me no complaints by infuriated neighbors or outraged family members! Special thanks to my friend Caveman for Los Gatos Negros!

Sure Miguel Lòpez Pérez does a great job over there at http://66spanishgarage.blogspot.it/ picking rare 45s (mostly) from Spanish groups (by artists from the 60s and “neo Yéyé-bands”). I have selected some 60s-Beat-tracks adding a few from my own collection. Although some of the better known groups have seen their work re-published most of the sounds here have never been compiled before. Hope you dig the show, and huge thanks to Miguel! Holá mi amigos! If you ask me what I love about the 60s-beat scene in Mexico, it’s because it’s F-U-N and craziness at the max! The focus is probably not so much on perfection (no wonder, talkin’ ‘bout garage and punk, hu?) or setting new “intellectual standards” but on dance, booze, and party. Thus, with this double-package here you’ll have to go through several cover-versions (4 times Hanky Panky - aka Yankee Panky / Hunky Punky and sometimes sounding like Soookie Sookie - , 4 times Nobody but You, 2 times Memphis Tenessee and Secret Agent man), yet one completely different to the other, and, as said, all pure fun guaranteed! So get yourself some sixpacks of cool Corona and a nice bottle of Tequila, and enjoy the Mexicans! Arriba! Andale! (huge thanks go out to scene 64 at http://www.youtube.com/user/scene64 for finding and sharing loads of rare beauties!)

UC147 - Forgotten Portuguese Nuggets

Portugal might not be the first place that comes to one’s mind talking about crude Garage-sounds. Still, os Conjuntos YéYé - who often took their name of the local high school - created some most enjoyable tunes, although "Shakin’ ol Over" (sic) or "I Can Tell" probably won’t kick bottom as Johnny & the Pirates or Ireland’s own Mad Lads do. Furthermore, Portuguese platters from the 60s are famous to look nearly transparent and to be worn out to the max, and the nations’ recording-facilities probably were other than state of the art, so prepare for some crackle and hiss. I have picked sounds that were overlooked by the creators of the Portuguese Nuggets-series (together with "The Wild 60's Sounds From Portugal" the only compilation-effort covering Portugal) but still are well worth listening, at least to my ears. (I know Groovie-Records has published the complete Os Tartaros’ discography on LP, but I’m sure you won’t go through tedious instros such as “Waltz at Midnight”). Thanks go out to Goncalo Moreno at http://www.youtube.com/user/GoncaloMoreno66 who decided to share his collection and posted most of the tracks here. So forget about Fado and Fandango, and take a deep dive into Portugal in the 60s.

1/ Night Stars, Os - Night Stars Twist
2/ Daniel Bacelar & Os Siderais - Porque Será
3/ Demónios Negros, Os - Shakin' ol over

Intermezzo: Losers of Rock’n’Roll: Part One: Pete Best!

zzz petebest8

This is a tribute to probably the most famous loser of RnR. It was 50 (!) years ago today (Aug. 16, 1962) when Pete Best was fired from the Beatles. A loser not only because he missed world-wide-fame but also as he incredibly would follow the road of wrong decisions: Why did he insist to record mostly the same cuts his substitute (Ringo) had sung and drummed much better? Why did he pick band-members with poorest skills of performing and writing? (they mustn’t have been out of his closest friends neither, since none of them ever would show up in Pete’s later “career”?). Why did he sign (after a sole 45 on Decca) with budget record-companies to be exploited in the most ridiculous ways (publishing his LP as “Best of the Beatles”?) Why did he continuously change band-name (PB Four, PB Combo) instead of sticking to one, maybe more “independent” moniker? Anyway, this multiple-loser, with all the times he was asked to tell his sad story over and over again, has all my sympathies. Listening to this selection (I know Cherry Red has issued a “complete Pete”-CD, but not many people would by it) (wonder why?), it comes clear why Sir George Martin (and the chaps, too) took that fatal decision. Pete just can’t keep the beat, most of the time he slows it down after the first lines, sometimes he’ll speed it up, and on some tracks (his version of RnR-Music) you might even think he momentarily left his drum-stool. And when the producer decided to pep sounds up adding cow-bell or a tambourine things get worse since you simply can’t hear his drumming! Still, I hope you’ll enjoy the soundtrack (and the pictures!) of a man who touched fortune and fame with his fingertips and probably did what he could not to vanish in oblivion – in one way or the other eventually succeeding!

After borderlining into the ridiculous (Juanita Banana) and even downright masochism (Pete Best) , to compensate everybody who has patiently suffered without complaining (or sending in bad comments), here’s something of THE REAL THING! This post is dedicated to the guys at the G45 Central-Forum (http://www.g45central.com), specially to the makers of “private” compilations that have become much sought for, and to those who thought of re-upping them. Massive thanks go out to Masterbeat64, Chuck C, Expo67, and JeffMiami who did, respectively, SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE – $ 300 FINE – KWOGMYRE – JEFF‘S FLORIDA FLASHBACKS and SIXTIES GARAGE BEAT, to pfft for doing the re-upps, and to BossHoss for generously posting selected flip-sides of the “100 best 45s of Garage” (G100). I hope you won’t mind that I had to flatten the audio-quality from flac to mp3 in order to get an overall-sound-volume. Who wants the original comps in flac, can go to http://www.g45central.com/forum/index.php?threads/still-looking-for-those-elusive-g100-tunes-groan-not-this-guy-again.246/ (G100-Flips) or to http://www.g45central.com/forum/index.php?threads/forum-comp-directory.572 (GPF-comps) (you have to register tho’). So here’s some crude, snotty, fuzz-laden, trippy, fratty, moody, angry, classic US-GARAGE, enjoy the REAL THING (or, at least, its flip-sides)!

UC 148/149 - Swedish Delights, pt. 1+2

Next stop-over on our flight through the time-warp: Sweden. For residents, some of the sounds collected here maybe familiar but I guess people living outside the land will dissent from JJ Burnell of the Stranglers (who had a Swedish member in their original line-up) who called Sweden “….the only land where the clouds are interesting” (meaning: the land, where only …). So get ready for a double-package of more or less uncompiled sounds, with a hodgepodge of original 45s, selected anthology-tracks plus some live-recordings and TV-clips. (Actually, seems that Swedish radio and television, as the film-industry, were quite open minded towards youth-culture in the 60s, and you can find great clips of many of the tracks featured here at Youtube (go to http://swedishbeat.wordpress.com). (Don’t miss the incredible, wild Wipe-Out-version by the 14 year old Caretakers and The Strangers with Go Go Girls at http://www.youtube.com/user/wasaexpress (scroll down). Enjoy Swedish Delights!

I know I’m late and the party’s long over, but there’s always the day after, right? So here’s my selection of 24 premier trash-instro-tracks, scratchy platters left in a pool of sick and booze, perfect for a heavy hangover, the real meal for fiends like us. Moans from putrefied mummies, lecherous looks from the undead, spooky strolls down Blood Alley, and scary Succubus, who/whatever that is, you’ll find out. Most of this creepy mix was and still is posted at http://www.youtube.com/user/scratchyoldies, go and check his awesome collection, I just picked the more monsterish trax out of 500 rare rockabilly- and prebeat-sounds. So now, let the blinds down, grab some of the half-empty cans from the floor, down the warm beer and let’s enjoy the trash-fest all over again. ‘Cos everyday is Halloween, if you only want to!

PS: My pal J.R. Williams who told me that some of the trax are not original 45s but fakes (from the 70s? even later?) posted by scratchyoldies to fool collecters is most probably right. Anyway, scratchy sure did a pretty good job at it, so I decided not to delete them from the list.

zzzz Dal-palco

Here’s a hodgepodge of swinging Mozarella-Beat, Pasta&Pomodoro-Pop and some deep Spaghetti-Soul, all sung in Italiano (if you count Sardinian in). Originally, I wanted to dub this double-pack “Perdenti d’Italia / Losers of Italy”, but then again, some of the songs here actually made it to national or European song-festivals. Another teasing title was the Delfini’s “We’re Rebels ‘cos Fashion says so” tho’ I hope this controversial and politically most uncorrect claim was just a desperate attempt to get a slot in the national RAI-TV which was (in)famous for censorship and bans (go asks Mister Anima or Thane Russall). Anyway, I’m pretty sure some of my friends (ciao Vince, Old Capellon, Aldo Reale and my friend from Turino!) will enjoy these sounds here, despite the poor audio-quality (mostly hand-ripped from YouTube). Say grazie tante to http://www.youtube.com/user/mmasimo (rivista Beati Voi), http://www.youtube.com/user/italianbeat , http://www.youtube.com/user/LeIntrovabili4 , http://www.youtube.com/user/cuculo48due , http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMARCODONDI et al. So stash these here platters in your micro-oven, put a pizza on your turntable, and dig the Beat from the Boot!

To start the new year, let’s take a SAA-ticket (first class, of course) and fly to Johannesburg and Durban in the 60s. You might have heard a good deal of the 28 tacks collected here, specially on the BeatinRock (or is that RockinBeat?)-series. I selected the ones that are missing on the few “official” SA-samplers (skipping the instrumentals) and I think we’ll get a most delightful menu with a few pretty rare dishes, such as the marvelous platter by the Fives (no info) and the awesome version of I’m Crying by the Secrets which can absolutely cope even with the Animals’ treatment I reckon. No liner-notes this time, I was too lazy. Hope you’ll dig this collection nevertheless. If not, drop me a line. Enjoy!

zz Caravelles_pic

For much too long I left the Girls behind, so here’s the first of three volumes dedicated to Ladies with a Beat! From Finland to Japan, from Turkey to New Zealand, from Germany to Mexico, in a time-warp from 63 to 74, I have selected girl groups and female voices that (mostly) didn’t make it to the official compilations. Strangely, the strict alphabetical order doesn’t spoil the overall-listening-fun I guess, most probably it’s that unique girlie touch which keeps it all together …? Once more, this selection proves that girls and brass fit greatly and you’ll get many a sounds with a strong beat and an urge to invade the dancing-floor. I’ll unleash volumes II and III in a few days, until then, I hope you’ll dig the first charge. Thanks to all bloggers and youtubers mentioned in the booklet, with special greetings to Graham Welch of the extraordinary http://www.readysteadygirls.eu and my pal, his highness the Lolly Pope from Roots and Traces http://spurensicherung.blogspot.it/ who kindly sent me some rare uncomped beauties.

Hot on the heels of number one, here’s the second sequel of my favorite beat-yé yé-mod-and soul ladies. A true double shindig, I’d hope, with 31 (mostly) uncomped beauties in alphabetical order. And here’s the third part of the series which actually is the 6th; to celebrate the girl groups and the female singers of the 60s, I have re-upped parts 1 http://www19.zippyshare.com/v/76375440/file.html , 2 http://www70.zippyshare.com/v/86899823/file.html and 3 http://www2.zippyshare.com/v/16203883/file.html . I hope you did enjoy the show although I can see that after 90 or more girlie tracks one might feel kinda pussywhipped….. So for now, let’s take Renate Kern’s advice, stop the beat, the party’s over, and don’t make noise on the stairs….

Delrays
Time to go back to the serious stuff…get a load of Garage-Gems from the USofA, some wild some mild, all never been compiled before (as far as I’m aware). Indeed, it’s marvelous that after nearly 50 years (really?) even some acetates continue to come up and if you only dig deep enough you will still find a lot of gold in the mines. Which is the famous g45 forum, 60sgaragebands.com, my friend’s Darren Brennessel’s archive, and heaps of dedicated youtubers and bloggers (all named in the booklet attached). Don’t be too harsh about the audio-quality, never use headphones, set your set to midrange (and to mono!), and turn up the volume! More US-gems in the can, stand by!

UC158 – French Cuts

zzz Les Swifts_pic
Back in France again, not only Paris but also Marseille, Rhône-Alpes, Mulhouse, Allier, and the Normandie-Region. In the 60s, mostly all French artits recorded “Extended Plays” (7”-EPs) with 4 songs and usually these came with glossy 4c-picture-sleeves. My fave track (maybe because my grandson‘s name?) is from singer Orlando, his version may sound a little lame at the start but soon you get aware he actually succeeds in turning the original Jagger-Richards-rant into kind of a “chanson”. And wait for the first drum-break. Astonishing. Don’t mind the Frenglish, neither the groups do, but enjoy a unique, often hilarious approach to Beat and Psychedelia. Mystery track is “Je n'ai pas su dire non"; youtube-channel “lesdemsoul bramhs” tags it as "Gale Garnett" who actually did record a song with the same title in France, but this can’t be her (unless she didn’t undergo a sex-change-surgery …). Any info is welcome. Thanks to the very fine site http://mixagesobsoletes.free.fr and to all bloggers and youtubers named in the booklet. Amusez-vous et profitez du spectacle!

Hello out there, this is your friendly undertaker once again. We don’t need Halloween to unleash the creeps, do we? So get a new load of monsters of all unkind, a few of’em appeared on some lesser known compilation but if you’re not exactly a doo-whop-fiend you might appreciate to encounter them in this here goulish gathering. Exceptionally, some rose from their tombs in the late 50s (and a few in the early 70s) but wait until you hear Mark IV moaning from Dante's Inferno! So, like Fred Fingers Lee says, let me take you for a spin, I’ll bury you deep and cheap!
